AI Sparks NEAR Protocol's Staggering 200% Price Surge!

The NEAR token experienced a remarkable surge in September, transforming from an underperforming altcoin into one of the market's strongest momentum stories within a few weeks. Starting the month near $1.80, NEAR accelerated sharply, more than doubling its value. By September 24, it had risen from approximately $2.62 on September 16 to $4.60. The rally continued, pushing NEAR to around $5.55 on September 27, and it closed September 30 at approximately $5.34. This impressive performance represented a gain of over 100% in roughly two weeks, positioning NEAR among the top-performing major altcoins during this period, as reported by historical market data.

This significant price appreciation was accompanied by a notable increase in derivatives activity. Santiment reported that while NEAR gained about 81% between September 13 and September 20, dollar-denominated open interest surged by 119%. However, open interest measured in NEAR tokens rose by only about 21%, indicating that a substantial portion of the increase was influenced by the token's rising dollar value rather than an equivalent expansion in underlying positions. Funding rates also reached approximately 1.6 times their two-month median during September, signaling increased leverage in the market. Santiment noted that leverage was becoming increasingly important, though metrics did not yet show typical positioning exhaustion.

Further boosting the derivatives market, NEAR spot trading went live on Hyperliquid between September 22-23, adding direct NEAR/USDC trading alongside its existing perpetual market. At the time, NEAR perpetual open interest on Hyperliquid stood at approximately $344 million, underscoring the considerable leveraged interest in the token.

A major institutional catalyst arrived on September 29 with the launch of Bitwise's first U.S. spot NEAR ETF. Listed on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR, this fund is designed to directly hold and stake NEAR tokens, operating with an annual fee of 0.75%. The ETF quickly garnered significant attention, reportedly attracting about $58 million in its first week by October 6.

The Bitwise ETF launch also drew focus to a comprehensive 40-page research report. In this report, Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan and Head of European Research André Dragosch presented several scenarios for NEAR's future valuation. Their maximum-case estimate projected an astonishing $562.81 by 2030. This ambitious projection is predicated on NEAR potentially capturing about 3% of the global AI agent market, which would equate to roughly 950 million agents, and applying a 50-times price-to-sales multiple based on a SaaS-style valuation framework.

The bullish narrative surrounding NEAR is increasingly supported by its evolving role beyond a general-purpose blockchain. The network has been actively building an ecosystem centered on AI agents, confidential inference, and cross-chain infrastructure. Recent developments include NEAR AI expanding its confidential-inference platform through an integration with OpenRouter on September 28. Additionally, NEAR One introduced the SPICE architecture on September 30, proposing a redesign to separate transaction execution from consensus, aiming to enhance scalability. These fundamental advancements provide crucial support for a rally that has otherwise been significantly driven by market momentum and derivatives activity.

However, alongside the rapid gains, NEAR's technical structure has become increasingly stretched. After briefly touching the $5.50-$5.55 area, the token pulled back towards $4.70-$5.00. As of October 6, it was trading around $5.16-$5.27, with its weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 75. The token's current price is substantially above its moving averages: the 50-day moving average is around $2.90, while the 100-day and 200-day averages are near $2.40 and $2.10, respectively. This widening gap underscores how far NEAR has moved beyond its established trend. The RSI briefly approached 85 before the latest pullback, indicating exceptionally strong momentum but also elevating the risk of a deeper retracement or an extended period of consolidation. While such conditions do not necessarily invalidate the broader uptrend, they can contribute to increased volatility in future gains.

The combination of the Bitwise ETF launch, growing institutional interest, and an expanding AI narrative provides potential fundamental backing for NEAR. Nevertheless, the rapid price appreciation has simultaneously made profit-taking and the extensive use of leverage significant risks. For the immediate future, the $4.60-$4.70 area stands as a key support zone. Maintaining a position above this level could enable NEAR to establish a higher base before attempting another push towards $5.00 and potentially the $5.40-$5.60 resistance area. Conversely, a sustained break below this critical support could heighten the probability of a deeper correction following the token's extraordinary September advance.
