AI Giant Anthropic Faces Massive $1.5 Billion Copyright Settlement

A significant legal development in the realm of artificial intelligence and intellectual property unfolded on Thursday as a federal judge in San Francisco approved a $1.5 billion settlement. This agreement resolves a dispute between AI company Anthropic and numerous authors who alleged that nearly half a million of their books were illegally pirated and subsequently used to train Anthropic's chatbots.
U.S. District Judge William Alsup granted the approval after the involved parties worked diligently to address his previously stated concerns regarding the settlement's structure and reach. Under the terms of the agreement, authors and publishers are set to receive approximately $3,000 for each book covered by the settlement. It is crucial to note that this settlement specifically applies to existing works and does not extend to future literary creations.
A filing submitted on Monday by the legal teams aimed to assure Judge Alsup that a robust system has been established to provide comprehensive notice to all eligible authors and publishers. This system is designed to ensure that everyone covered by the agreement is aware of their entitlement to a share of the settlement funds or their option to opt out, thereby preserving their legal rights moving forward. Furthermore, assurances were given that the author and publisher groups instrumental in forging this deal, namely the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers, are not engaging in any clandestine dealings that could disadvantage lesser-known authors.
