African Startups Poised for Growth as Flourish Ventures Injects $6M into Madica
Flourish Ventures has injected an additional $6 million into Madica, its pre-seed program for African startups, aiming to support 25-30 more companies over the next three years. This investment targets underserved markets and diverse founders, providing crucial capital and mentorship amid a decline in early-stage funding across Africa.Flourish Ventures, a US venture firm, has committed an additional $6 million to Madica, its specialized pre-seed investment program dedicated to African startups. This significant capital injection aims to bolster the growth of 25 to 30 more companies over the coming three years, addressing critical funding gaps within the continent's vibrant, yet often underserved, startup ecosystem.
Madica, which was initially launched by Flourish in October 2022 and began making its first investments in 2024, provides each selected startup with up to $200,000 in funding. Beyond financial backing, the program offers a comprehensive support system including 18 months of intensive mentorship, executive coaching, and crucial investor-readiness support. Notably, the entire $6 million is ring-fenced exclusively for new pre-seed and seed deals, with no portion allocated for follow-on rounds, ensuring a fresh wave of foundational support. While a separate, undisclosed budget covers ongoing founder support, the transparency in capital allocation underscores Madica's focused mission.
The investment comes at a pivotal time, as early-stage funding for African startups, particularly in the $100,000 to $1 million range, experienced a substantial decline of 44%. This drop saw the number of deals fall from 179 in the second half of 2025 to just 100 in the first half of 2026, highlighting a contraction in investor confidence at this crucial stage. Madica's strategic intervention, with its $200,000 cheque size, directly confronts this trend by targeting the very segment where investors are currently withdrawing.
A core tenet of Madica's strategy is its commitment to fostering innovation outside the traditionally dominant African markets. While Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa collectively received an overwhelming 82% of startup funding in 2025, they represent only 30% of Africa's total population. Madica intentionally seeks out founders beyond these four main hubs, thereby addressing the challenge of securing early-stage funding in underrepresented regions. Its recent expansion into Algeria and Cameroon in September marks a tangible step towards broadening its geographical impact.
Madica has already demonstrated notable success, having supported 18 startups across 10 countries. On average, its portfolio companies have successfully raised double Madica's initial investment from other investors, signaling a strong ability to attract crucial follow-on capital. This success is particularly significant in a landscape where securing subsequent funding remains a major hurdle for many pre-seed ventures.
Furthermore, Madica actively champions diversity within its portfolio. Over half of its supported companies are majority African-owned, more than 50% have at least one female co-founder, and an impressive 39% are led by female CEOs. This commitment not only addresses critical diversity gaps within the ecosystem but also showcases the potential for high-growth ventures from diverse leadership teams.
Emmanuel Adegboye, Head of Madica, acknowledges that assessing venture outcomes requires a longer timeframe than the initial three-year program duration. Nevertheless, the program's success will be evaluated based on whether its startups achieve lasting growth and deliver significant venture returns. By proving that early traction can lead to sustained success and profitability in overlooked segments, Madica aims to establish a replicable blueprint for other investors. The ultimate goal is to direct more early-stage capital towards founders beyond established major markets, fostering a more inclusive, robust, and geographically diversified African startup ecosystem.
