An unexpected and awe-inspiring spectacle unfolded on the final day of a two-week adventure through Botswana with safari operator Desert & Delta. Despite the fatigue from a sleepless "sleepout" beneath the Milky Way core in the Makgadikgadi Pans, the author sought deep reflection. What began as a quiet morning scanning the Boteti River from Leroo La Tau Lodge soon transformed into an extraordinary wildlife encounter. A distant dust cloud rapidly revealed its source: a colossal herd of zebra, parading down to the lodge's waterfront. Within minutes, hundreds of black-and-white-striped beauties, joined by hee-hawing wildebeest and trumpeting elephants, created a breathtaking scene—the “secret migration” of Africa.
For many safari enthusiasts, the Great Wildebeest Migration in Tanzania and Kenya is the pinnacle of wildlife viewing. However, concerns about overtourism and vehicle congestion near the Mara River in 2022 prompted the author to seek out alternative, less crowded migration experiences. The journey of Botswana’s zebra herds emerged as a captivating option. In 2014, biologists from WWF and Elephants Without Borders made a significant discovery: Burchell’s zebra undertake a remarkable 300-mile journey through southern Africa, migrating between the floodplains of the Chobe River and Nxai Pan National Park, just north of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. This movement of approximately 30,000 zebra represents the longest-known land mammal migration in Africa, as documented by WWF's research.
More recently, scientists confirmed an additional migration route directly linking the Okavango Delta with Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. This new understanding strategically places Desert & Delta’s Leroo La Tau Lodge directly in the heart of this incredible natural phenomenon. As explained by guide Mathale “Metal” Mosheti, the area surrounding the lodge serves as a crucial regrouping point for the zebra. These migrating herds spend roughly half the year, from mid-April to early November, congregating here, accumulating numbers, and patiently awaiting the seasonal rains. The lodge's private 1,600-foot expanse of riverfront acts as a vital meeting place, where the zebra, along with a diverse array of other animals like elephants, wildebeest, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, kudu, and fish eagles, gather before dispersing along various routes to follow the green grass. Eventually, they reunite back near this Leroo La Tau home base.
A key advantage of witnessing this migration at Leroo La Tau is the profound sense of seclusion and the absence of large tourist crowds. Stephen Frenkel, marketing and sales manager for Desert & Delta Safaris, attributes this to the lodge's location off the main tourist track. He emphasizes that while the zebra migration is known within the region, it remains a “hidden gem of the northern Botswana safari experience” in the broader context. This exclusivity ensures low visitor numbers and well-dispersed properties in the area, alleviating concerns about overtourism and preserving the pristine natural environment for both wildlife and observers.
Leroo La Tau, which translates to “lion’s paw” in Setswana, was acquired by Desert & Delta approximately 15 years ago. The lodge comprises 12 charming thatched-roof suites, each thoughtfully designed with a private balcony and a full glass-walled side overlooking the Boteti River. This architectural choice allows guests to observe the unfolding migration from the comfort of their bed, shower, or balcony. In 2023, the property underwent a significant refurbishment aimed at further enhancing the migration-viewing experience. The renovation focused on complementing the spectacle with the region’s expansive “big blue skies and wide-open spaces,” creating a nature-inspired aesthetic throughout the lodge, including the main dining area with its wood finishes, vaulted ceilings, and a loft library above the bar. Even the leadwood and acacia logs ringing the river-view fireplace are natural elements brought in by local elephants.
One of the most exciting upgrades for guests arriving to witness the zebra migration is the enhanced viewing hide. This perch has been transformed into a multifunctional space, offering more tables and chairs, the option for private dining, and the magical possibility of enjoying sundowners amidst a myriad of African animals. These stationary viewing experiences, whether from the hide or the private balconies, seamlessly complement traditional safari drives in the neighboring Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. While Leroo La Tau’s riverfront offers incredible species diversity, large predators like lions are rarely seen there; as guide Mosheti explains, lions are ambush predators who prefer the cover of the national park to hunt, where hyenas, cheetahs, and jackals also reside. The absence of predation and noisy safari vehicles at the lodge allows visitors to observe animals in their most natural states, interacting authentically without human interference, thereby providing an unparalleled and truly authentic migration experience.
