AFCON Drama: Mohamed Amoura Issues Apology After Controversial ‘Lumumba’ Mockery Incident

Algeria forward Mohamed Amoura has issued a public apology following widespread criticism concerning his celebration during Algeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo at AFCON 2025. This incident quickly escalated from a late-game football moment into a broader discussion encompassing symbolism, history, and respect.
The match, held in Rabat, saw Algeria clinch a spot in the quarter-finals against Nigeria after Adil Boulbina scored the decisive goal in the 119th minute. As the final whistle blew, Amoura turned towards the stands and mimicked a distinctive pose before falling to the turf. This gesture was immediately recognized by many viewers and linked to Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, DR Congo's renowned superfan, often referred to as “Lumumba”.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga has gained considerable attention at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, primarily for his characteristic stance: standing motionless throughout DR Congo matches with one hand raised. This pose serves as a profound tribute to Patrice Lumumba, who was DR Congo’s first prime minister and a pivotal Pan-African figure. Lumumba was assassinated in 1961, shortly after Congo gained independence from Belgium. Consequently, for countless Congolese supporters, this image holds deep political and historical significance, representing a revered national hero and a symbol of Africa's struggle for independence.
Amoura’s actions swiftly drew condemnation online, with many interpreting his celebration not merely as mockery of a fan, but as a disrespectful gesture towards the legacy of Patrice Lumumba and the wider African independence movement. As the backlash intensified, the Wolfsburg striker utilized social media to offer an explanation and convey his regrets.
In his statement, Amoura clarified, “The match against Congo was a big game, very intense, with a lot of tension and emotion on the pitch. I want to clarify one thing: at that moment, I was not aware of what the person or the symbol in the stands represented. I simply wanted to banter, in a good-natured spirit, with no bad intentions or desire to provoke anyone.” He further expressed his respect for Congo and its team, wishing them success in qualifying for the World Cup. Amoura concluded by saying, “If my attitude could have been misunderstood, I sincerely regret it, because that was absolutely not my intention. I remain focused on the pitch and on representing my country with pride.”
Beyond Amoura’s personal apology, reports indicate that the Algerian Football Federation has also taken steps to de-escalate tensions. The federation is said to have extended an official invitation to Mboladinga, with a VVIP delegation reportedly dispatched to Casablanca to formally welcome him, signaling an effort to mend any perceived diplomatic or cultural offense.
