Adam Sandler Honored with Prestigious ASCAP Founders Award for Songwriting Genius

Adam Sandler, celebrated for his comedic genius and a recipient of the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2023, is set to be honored for his significant contributions to songwriting. The 59-year-old artist will receive the ASCAP Founders Award, an accolade bestowed upon songwriters and composers who have made pioneering contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their peers. This esteemed award has previously recognized legendary figures such as Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Patti Smith, Billy Joel, and Neil Young, underscoring the profound impact Sandler has had on the music landscape.

The ASCAP Founders Award acknowledges Sandler's diverse contributions to music and songwriting across various domains, including comedy, film, and popular culture. He will formally accept the award at the 2026 ASCAP Experience, a comprehensive event featuring panels, workshops, and performances. This event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 12, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Paul Williams, ASCAP chairman of the board and president, lauded Sandler's unique ability to merge comedy and music. Williams highlighted Sandler's most iconic musical moments, ranging from characters like 'Opera Man' and hits like 'The Chanukah Song' to heartfelt tunes such as 'Grow Old With You.' He emphasized how Sandler's genius in blending these elements helps audiences appreciate the wonders and absurdities of life and love, expressing ASCAP's honor in recognizing his singular impact on the comedy music canon.

As an ASCAP member for 33 years, Sandler has cultivated a remarkable body of work, with nearly 450 ASCAP-registered creations. These range from amusing ballads to playful sing-alongs, leaving an indelible mark on both comedy and music. His 1995 classic, 'The Chanukah Song,' recorded live at UC Santa Barbara, impressively reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Airplay chart, followed by his 1996 release, 'The Thanksgiving Song,' which also charted. Sandler's musical contributions are integral to his comedic identity, from famous 'Saturday Night Live' classics like 'Lunchlady Land' and 'Red Hooded Sweatshirt' to a poignant tribute to Chris Farley in his 2019 Netflix special, '100% Fresh.'

Sandler has released six albums throughout his career, three of which earned Grammy nominations for Best Spoken Comedy Album: 'They’re All Gonna Laugh at You!', 'What the Hell Happened to Me?', and 'Stan and Judy’s Kid.' Furthermore, his songs have been prominently featured in several of his successful films, including 'The Wedding Singer' ('Grow Old With You'), '50 First Dates' ('Forgetful Lucy'), 'The Meyerowitz Stories' ('Genius Girl'), and 'Eight Crazy Nights' ('The Chanukah Song, Part 3').

Now in its 20th year, the ASCAP Experience serves as a vital platform for aspiring songwriters, composers, and producers, connecting them with industry leaders and hitmakers. It provides practical guidance, creative inspiration, and essential tools for navigating the evolving music industry. The 2026 Experience is confirmed to feature an impressive roster of participants, including Grammy-winning songwriter/producer duo Nova Wav, writer and activist Justin Tranter, Oscar-nominated songwriter Mark Sonnenblick, four-time Grammy-winning creator James Fauntleroy, hitmaker Andreas Carlsson, and writer-producers Darrell Brown and Theron “Neff-U” Feemster. Additionally, legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will partake in an afternoon fireside chat.

The day’s events will commence with ASCAP’s membership meeting, featuring an opening performance by Cautious Clay, followed by remarks from Paul Williams and ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews. The remainder of the day will be dedicated to a diverse array of panels, performances, and workshops, reinforcing the event's commitment to nurturing musical talent and innovation.
