Adam Demos Spills the Tea: Who Was His Toughest Co-Star on ‘Spa Weekend’?
Adam Demos discusses his role as Kai in the new film Spa Weekend, where he plays the love interest to Leslie Mann's character, Jane. He shares insights into building their on-screen chemistry, the improvisational nature of the set, and his thoughts on a potential sequel. Demos also reflects on his favorite moments during filming and what he learned from his powerhouse co-stars.
Adam Demos, known for his roles as charismatic love interests in Netflix rom-coms like Falling Inn Love and A Perfect Pairing, and series such as UnREAL and Sex/Life, continues this trend in his newest film, Spa Weekend. In the movie, Demos portrays Kai, a sweet and witty yoga instructor who forms a special connection with Jane, a single mom and lawyer played by Leslie Mann. Despite an age gap and living in different cities, their undeniable chemistry drives the plot, with Kai encouraging Jane to live for herself and Jane inspiring Kai to pursue his abandoned dreams.
In an interview with Collider, Demos delved into his experience working on Spa Weekend. He spoke about building a playful and authentic chemistry with Leslie Mann, attributing it to Mann's incredible talent, their good rapport off-set, and the directors' encouragement for being present and improvising. Demos highlighted the fluid nature of the scenes, where actors were comfortable interrupting and answering naturally. He mentioned the blooper reel as evidence of extensive improvisation and shared that the hardest part was trying not to laugh during Isla Fisher's yells and the strippers' improvisations on his first day.
Discussing the seemingly absurd yet romantic hand massage scene, Demos explained his approach: acknowledging the inherent silliness of the offer to make it work. He credited Leslie Mann with doing the “heavy lifting” in the scene, making the romance and groundedness believable. Looking ahead, Demos mused about a potential Spa Weekend sequel, envisioning Kai's restaurant as a yoga studio-slash-eatery with healthy, biodynamic options, plenty of crystals, and possibly a smoothie bar vibe, though he deferred to the writers for specific details.
Regarding his personal preferences, Demos revealed his love for country music, naming Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton as his go-to artists for road trip playlists. He also touched upon his childhood movie watching habits, noting that while he watched films like Anchorman at a young age due to being raised by a single mother, nothing he saw was scarring, unlike Jane's kids watching Pulp Fiction in the movie.
Demos described the first day on set, when his character meets the women, as his favorite, calling it “the most fun I've ever had on a job.” He recalled the beautiful beach setting on the Gold Coast, the collective improvisation before his entrance, and his overwhelming feeling of happiness and gratitude.
