So what goes into teaching kids to be resilient? Here are a few skills that parents should be nurturing and encouraging in their kids every single day.

  • Problem-solving

In school, peer groups, and among friends, problem-solving is a skill that will stay with your kids throughout their lives.

Encouraging children to think through challenges instead of immediately solving problems for them helps build independence.

  • Autonomy and self-efficacy

Having control over their own decisions and believing in their abilities can shape a child’s confidence.

When children feel trusted to make choices—whether it's choosing extracurricular activities or managing homework—they develop a strong sense of responsibility.

  • Empathy

Being able to place oneself in someone else’s situation is an essential life skill.

Teaching children to respect differences and care for others strengthens their relationships and helps them navigate diverse social environments.

  • Emotional regulation and impulse control

Younger children may struggle to manage emotions, but mindfulness and emotional awareness can help them grow.

It develops through mastering new skills, when children are given opportunities to try, fail, practice, and eventually succeed, they build a strong sense of self-belief.
