Zoning Bombshell: Enugu NDC Rejects Traditional Candidacy Rules for 2027 Guber Race

The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has announced a significant decision regarding its 2027 governorship ticket, declaring it open to all qualified aspirants across the state. This strategic move deviates from traditional zoning arrangements, as the party explicitly stated it has not zoned the coveted position to any specific senatorial district. Under the leadership of Dr. Johnpaul Anih, the party emphasized that this approach is designed to ensure the fielding of a strong candidate capable of defeating the ruling party in Enugu State in the upcoming general elections.

Following a State Working Committee (SWC) meeting, Mr. Emmanuel Ugwueze, the party’s Publicity Secretary, reaffirmed that any eligible citizen of Enugu State, regardless of their senatorial zone, is free to contest for the governorship ticket. He articulated the party's unwavering determination to win the 2027 gubernatorial election, asserting that the party would not compromise on candidate capacity for the sake of zoning. Ugwueze highlighted the party's primary objective to "capture the Lion Building," symbolizing the State Government House, and assured that all available options and strategies would be deployed to achieve this victory.

However, Ugwueze clarified that while the governorship ticket remains open, the NDC has indeed adopted specific zoning arrangements for senatorial positions across the state. This decision was made to uphold the principles of fairness, equity, and inclusion within the party's internal democracy. According to these arrangements, the Enugu East Senatorial District seat has been allocated to the Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, with a particular focus on the Enugu North Local Government Area. Similarly, the Enugu North Senatorial District slot has been zoned to the Igboeze South Local Government Area, and the Enugu West Senatorial District position is designated for Awgu Local Government Area.

Further elaborating on the party's electoral strategies, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, the party’s Secretary, confirmed that decisions had also been reached for some federal constituencies, with others still under review by a dedicated zoning committee. Notably, the Awgu–Aninri and Oji River federal constituency seat has been zoned to Aninri, a resolution achieved after thorough consultations with stakeholders. Okafor urged party members to remain calm and avoid misinformation, emphasizing that consultations are ongoing regarding other electoral positions, including the governorship ticket. He also issued a stern warning against what he described as attempts by "some APC agents" to destabilize the party and undermine its electoral prospects. Okafor concluded by appealing to aspirants from zones not yet allocated positions to step down and support consensus candidates for the overall interest of the party and the state.
