Zendaya & Pattinson's 'The Drama' Divides Critics: Cringey or Comedic Genius?

Kristoffer Borgli's film "The Drama" is a squirm comedy, dark romantic drama, and psychodrama that delves into the profound anxieties and uncertainties of a committed relationship, particularly leading up to marriage. Starring Robert Pattinson as Charlie and Zendaya as Emma, the movie explores how individual perspectives, past secrets, and deep-seated fears can profoundly alter the reality of love and commitment.
The film opens with a meticulously crafted meet-cute between Charlie, a British yuppie museum curator, and Emma, a seemingly well-adjusted woman. Charlie, exhibiting an almost pathologically twitchy demeanor from the outset, approaches Emma in an upscale coffee bar, feigning familiarity with the novel she's reading. This initial encounter, shot with hyper-realistic lighting and jump-cuts reminiscent of Godard, sets an immediate tone of toxic anxiety and unsettling energy. Charlie's nervous fumbling, initially misconstrued as stalker-like, is later revealed to be partly due to Emma's deafness in one ear and an AirPod in the other, highlighting how miscommunication and individual perceptions shape their interactions.
As Charlie and Emma's relationship blossoms, depicted through flash-cut montages of their romance, the narrative swiftly progresses to their wedding preparations. The true catalyst for "The Drama" unfolds during a pre-wedding menu tasting, where they are joined by Charlie's best man, Mike (Mamoudou Athie), and Emma's maid of honor, Rachel (Alana Haim). Over copious amounts of pink wine, they engage in a parlor game: sharing the worst thing they've ever done. Rachel confesses to a disturbing act of locking a mentally impaired boy in a closet, a revelation met with discomfort. However, it is Emma's confession that shatters the evening, leaving everyone, especially Charlie, shell-shocked. Emma reveals that as a shy, bullied 15-year-old, she nearly committed a school shooting, even possessing her father's shotgun and practicing with it, which caused her to become deaf in one ear. Circumstances intervened, preventing the act, but the admission transforms the atmosphere from mischievous to terrifying.
This shocking disclosure plunges Charlie into a severe neurotic unraveling, sparking an intense crisis of cold feet. He grapples with the terrifying possibility that he is about to marry a psychopath, unable to reconcile the seemingly radiant and relatable Emma he fell in love with, played with nuanced charisma by Zendaya, with the dark past she has just revealed. The film masterfully portrays Charlie's internal struggle, with Pattinson delivering an increasingly twitchy and compulsively rational performance as he debates whether his fears are justified or merely a hyperbolic manifestation of ordinary wedding anxiety. Borgli employs quick flashes and imagined realities, such as Charlie envisioning himself with the teenage version of Emma or Emma fantasizing about Charlie laughing off her revelation, to provide profound insight into their respective mindsets and emotional turmoil.
Kristoffer Borgli, known for his provocative films like "Sick of Myself" (which explored self-mutilation for attention and referenced a school shooting) and "Dream Scenario" (a surreal comedy featuring Nicolas Cage), utilizes a clinical, psychodramatic mode in "The Drama." He skillfully blends cringe-comedy with unsettling drama, creating a mix of tones that is both unnerving and thought-provoking. The film raises complex ethical questions, such as whether almost committing a mass shooting is worse than actually locking a child in a closet, and critiques pre-wedding rituals through acid satire, exemplified by a ridiculously stern dance coach. Borgli's direction ensures that even as Charlie experiences an "off the deep end" descent, including an aggressive pass at his museum assistant, Misha (Hailey Benton Gates), the narrative remains anchored in a dark, intricate exploration of insecurities and the unknown aspects of those we love.
Both Robert Pattinson and Zendaya deliver standout performances. Pattinson's portrayal of Charlie's descent into anxiety is both intense and darkly comedic, solidifying his range in experimental and comedic roles. Zendaya's Emma is her most complex to date, navigating the struggle of not being defined by her past while maintaining her outwardly cheerful demeanor. The supporting cast, including Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie, further enhances the film's escalating intensity. "The Drama" culminates in a farcical yet impactful wedding sequence that, despite the film's earlier dithering, delivers a truly satisfying climax, leaving audiences with a memorable and complex story about love, second chances, and the inherent fear of what we don't know about our partners. It is hailed as an excruciatingly uncomfortable, wonderfully honest, and remarkably intricate approach to relationships, positioning Borgli as an original filmmaker akin to a blend of Dogme 95 and "Wedding Crashers."
