Zambian Judicial Integrity Under Fire: President Hichilema's Appointments Ignite Fierce Opposition

Recent judicial appointments in Zambia have ignited a multifaceted discussion, drawing both commendation for upholding meritocracy and significant apprehension from opposition parties regarding potential political motivations. Reviewer Kelvin Kaunda expressed satisfaction that the majority of those elevated were appointed on merit, deeming them deserving of the recognition. While acknowledging past disagreements, Kaunda commended the Head of State for promoting distinguished individuals who have demonstrated competence, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law.
However, this positive appraisal contrasts sharply with the concerns raised by Zambia's opposition. The Democratic Union (DU), led by Ackim Njobvu, questioned both the timing and intent behind the appointments, made by the United Party for National Development (UPND) government just a month before the dissolution of Parliament. Njobvu suggested these appointments appear politically motivated, especially with approximately 15 bills still pending, arguing that the ruling party might be attempting to influence the judiciary by placing loyalists in key positions. He urged citizens to demand that leaders prioritize the nation’s best interests, emphasizing the critical importance of an independent and impartial judiciary.
