Ye's Epic Return: Kanye West Teams Up With North West for First Mexico Show in Two Decades

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, made a significant return to the stage on Friday, January 30, in Mexico City, marking his first concert in the Latin American country in nearly two decades since his debut there in 2008. The event, held at the imposing La México (formerly Plaza de Toros México), drew an audience of nearly 40,000 attendees, according to organizers. This performance highlighted a compelling duality of the controversial hip-hop superstar: the innovative artist navigating the complexities of evolution and controversy in his public life, juxtaposed with the image of a dedicated family man.
A particularly emotional moment of the night featured Ye joined by his eldest daughter, North West, whom he shares with his ex-wife Kim Kardashian. Together, they performed “Only One” during the first of two nights at the venue. The teenage North, sporting long, blue hair, also performed four additional songs, including “Piercing on my Hand,” marking her official debut in the music world. This collaborative performance underscored a tender family aspect amidst Ye's return to the spotlight.
The concert itself commenced with Ye making a grand entrance, clad in a white tunic and escorted by a group of men resembling monks to the center of the arena. The first beats of “Heartless” then filled the air, initiating a musical ritual packed with numerous hits from his discography. The setlist included standout tracks such as “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” “N—s in Paris,” “Mercy,” “Blood on the Leaves,” “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead,” “Power,” “Bound 2,” and “STARS.”
Ye opted for a distinctly minimalist stage design, utilizing a circular platform devoid of structures or screens. This approach maximized the arena’s vast space and ensured 360-degree visibility for the expansive audience. The stage itself evoked the imagery of a giant moon, at times transforming into what felt like the boiling crater of a volcano, accentuated by vibrant red lights and fireworks that exploded over the arena, illuminating the night sky. Throughout the performance, Ye maintained minimal verbal interaction with the audience, instead focusing on a relentless delivery of hit after hit, pausing only occasionally to absorb the enthusiastic roar of the crowd, which maintained a high level of energy from beginning to end. Anthems like “Power” and “Black Skinhead” particularly ignited the audience’s excitement, many of whom were too young to have experienced his first Mexican debut with the “Glow in the Dark Tour” in 2008.
The concert experience was also designed to be a collective global event. Friday’s concert, along with the planned Saturday, January 31, show, was made available for streaming outside of Mexico via the ViX Premium platform. This was part of a larger project creatively directed by Ye himself, titled “YE LIVE,” which aims to broadcast his performances simultaneously in various other countries. Notably, special guests, including rapper Travis Scott and Mexican regional superstar Peso Pluma, who had been speculated about on social media for days and hinted at by concert promoter Andrés Charvel, did not make an appearance during the first night. Peso Pluma had recently recorded a song with Ye, potentially for his new album, “Bully.”
Ye's highly anticipated return to Mexico came just days after a significant public gesture: he published a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal on Monday, January 26, to issue an apology for the antisemitic comments he had made, which had garnered years of harsh criticism. After a prolonged period where his name was often more associated with his controversial actions than with his musical contributions, this concert served as a powerful demonstration that Ye continues to adeptly blur the lines between artistic expression, public controversy, and personal family life, consistently holding the world's attention.
