Writers Guild Awards 2026: Live Updates as Winners Emerge

The Writers Guild Awards are currently underway in New York City, celebrating excellence in film, television, and digital writing.

The traditional West Coast ceremony in Los Angeles was canceled due to an ongoing strike by the Writers Guild Staff Union, which began on February 17.

The union is advocating for higher wages and "just cause" protections within the employee discipline process.

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. is hosting the New York show at the Edison Ballroom, where Stephen Colbert is also set to receive the prestigious Walter Bernstein Award.

On the film side, the Adapted Screenplay award went to Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" — a screen story by Anderson inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland — besting strong nominees including Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" and Chloé Zhao's "Hamnet."

The Original Screenplay category remains hotly contested, with notable contenders including Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror film "Sinners," Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein's ping-pong drama "Marty Supreme," and Zach Cregger's "Weapons."

The Documentary Screenplay award went to Mstyslav Chernov's "2,000 Meters to Andriivka."

On the television front, "Pluribus" led with four nominations, while "The Pitt" and "The Studio" each received three nods.

"The Pitt" ultimately won Best New Series, "Dying for Sex" took home the Limited Series prize, and Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow's "Deep Cover" won for TV & Streaming Motion Pictures.

"Celebrity Jeopardy!" won Quiz and Audience Participation, and "The Young and the Restless" claimed the Daytime Drama prize.

News and digital writing also received recognition across multiple categories.

"The L.A. Wildfires" from World News Tonight with David Muir won for Regularly Scheduled News, while "Remembering Palestinian Journalists Killed by Israeli Forces" from MSNBC won for Analysis, Feature, or Commentary.
