WNBA Star Arike Ogunbowale Cleared: Battery Charges Dropped
The misdemeanor battery case against Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale has been officially dropped, as confirmed by the State Attorney's Office in Miami to ESPN on Wednesday. Ogunbowale was arrested two months prior following an alleged altercation at a Miami nightclub. The charges were dropped via a nolle prosse at a hearing on Wednesday morning, indicating that the prosecutor withdrew the criminal charges before they could proceed to trial.
Mitch Schuster of Meister Seelig & Schuster, Ogunbowale's attorney, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "We are pleased that the State Attorney's Office has exercised its discretion and elected not to move forward with this matter," Schuster told ESPN, emphasizing that "Ms. Ogunbowale is a person of outstanding character, and we are excited that these charges have been dismissed so she can resume her focus on her professional career."
The incident leading to her arrest occurred on March 5 at approximately 4:20 a.m. Police records from Miami-Dade County state that Ogunbowale allegedly punched a man in the face at a nightclub. According to the police report, she struck the man with a closed fist, causing him to fall to the ground. Footage from the nightclub reportedly captured the incident, corroborating the man's account to authorities.
At the time of her arrest, Ogunbowale was celebrating a significant achievement: winning the Unrivaled championship with the Mist, where she had contributed 19 points in the final game.
Ogunbowale is a highly accomplished player, recognized as a four-time All-Star and a two-time All-Star game MVP. She recently solidified her commitment to the Dallas Wings by re-signing with the team on a new two-year deal. With the legal matter behind her, Ogunbowale is now poised to begin the Dallas Wings' season, which is scheduled to start this Saturday against the Indiana Fever.
