WNBA Forges New Path: Historic CBA Ratified, Set to Transform League and Player Fortunes

A new era for the WNBA has officially begun, marked by the unanimous ratification of a "transformational" seven-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) by both the players' union and the league's Board of Governors. This landmark deal, running through 2032, ushers in significant changes, particularly financial gains for players and an ambitious, condensed offseason schedule leading up to the league's 30th season, tipping off on May 8.
The new CBA brings historic financial improvements, with the salary cap for the 2026 season set to jump to $7 million, a substantial increase from $1.5 million in 2025, and projected to surpass $10 million by the deal's conclusion. The supermax salary will start at $1.4 million in 2026, up from $249,244 in 2025, while the regular max will be $1.19 million, representing 17% of the cap. The average player salary is expected to be around $600,000 in 2026, significantly higher than the $120,000 average in 2025. Minimum salaries are now tiered based on years of service, ranging from $270,000 for zero years to $300,000 for players with 10 or more years of experience, with all these amounts increasing by 4% annually.
Rookies also stand to benefit immensely. The No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft will earn $500,000, a dramatic increase from approximately $75,000 in 2025. A No. 1 pick's rookie-scale salary will exceed $2.2 million over four years. Additionally, lottery picks will now receive full salary protection in their first year, with opportunities for other picks to gain additional protection. A new "Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract" (EPIC) feature allows players on rookie deals to renegotiate their fourth year and secure long-term extensions, potentially reaching max or supermax levels based on on-court achievements.
Beyond current players, the CBA addresses the legacy of retired athletes, offering recognition payments ranging from $30,000 to $100,000 based on years of service. Retired players with four or more years of service will also receive up to a $1,200 annual reimbursement for healthcare expenses. Furthermore, teams can now offer up to seven guaranteed contracts, an increase from six, excluding rookie-scale deals.
The league calendar will also see significant shifts. Starting in 2027, the WNBA season could extend to November 21, nearly a month later than the previous CBA, and potentially even November 30 in 2028 due to the Olympics. The number of regular-season games will increase to up to 50 by 2027 and 52 by 2029, up from a maximum of 44. Players will also have an earlier report date, requiring them to arrive in their home markets by April 15 (or the start of training camp) beginning in 2027, a change that could impact those playing overseas during the offseason.
Player welfare and support are central to the new agreement. Teams are now mandated to provide nursing rooms and, starting in 2027, a family room at their home arena. By 2028, specific requirements for practice facilities include an exclusive locker room with sufficient amenities, a private WNBA regulation court, separate weight and cardio areas, a medical/treatment room, and a designated hygienic meal area. Staffing requirements have expanded significantly, mandating two athletic trainers, two team physicians, a strength and conditioning coach, a physical therapist, a director of sports medicine, a massage therapist, and access to a nutritionist, alongside at least one security personnel. Family-friendly provisions include mandatory travel for dependent children aged 13 or younger with an extra hotel room, two weeks of paid leave for nonbirthing parents, and expanded family planning benefits to players with two-plus years of service and their partners/spouses.
Other key provisions include a new revenue-sharing model where players receive 20% of the prior year's gross revenue. A joint WNBA/WNBPA committee will oversee a voluntary wearables program from 2026-2028, potentially becoming mandatory by 2028, with player data explicitly prohibited from use in contract negotiations. A committee will also be formed to develop parameters for new predraft requirements, including a potential combine, ahead of the 2027 season. Developmental player spots have been added, allowing teams to carry two additional players not counting against the salary cap, with specific eligibility and activation rules. The WNBPA will now manage and control licensing rights for adult jerseys.
The ratification sets the stage for a whirlwind 46-day offseason, described as "chaos" by many, before the May 8 season opener. This compressed timeline includes: an expansion draft on April 6 for the new Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire franchises, with current teams protecting five players each before the new teams select; a massive free agency period beginning April 7, featuring over 100 players including former MVPs A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, with formal signings starting April 12; and the college draft on April 13 in New York City. The Dallas Wings hold the No. 1 pick, projected to select UConn's Azzi Fudd. Training camps are scheduled to open on April 19, leaving coaches and players with a mere week to finalize rosters and prepare for preseason games starting April 25.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized that despite the tight schedule, the league remains focused on building on its unprecedented momentum. This new agreement ensures that the WNBA, with its expanded schedule, growing number of teams (up to 18 by 2030), and significantly enhanced player compensation and support, is poised for generations of growth and success.
