Warning: Your Next Job Interview Might Be With an AI Bot!
Recruiters are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) for job interviews, primarily at the screening stage, in response to the overwhelming volume of AI-generated job applications received from easy-apply job boards. This growing trend involves companies utilizing chatbots for interviews via phone calls, text messaging, or video chats with on-screen avatars. While AI-powered hiring tools have been in use for years, their application has expanded significantly with technological advancements.
Many jobseekers find AI job interviews unsettling, and some have even withdrawn from the hiring process because of them. Despite this, the trend appears to be a permanent fixture in modern recruitment. Research indicates a rise in jobseekers encountering AI interviews, though the reasons for applicant withdrawal could range from discomfort to concerns about fraud or low intent.
To succeed in an AI job interview, preparation is crucial. Experts advise candidates to approach these interviews with the same rigor as human-led ones. Firstly, thorough homework is essential: review the job description, research the organization, and understand its specific requirements. Tailoring responses to align with these expectations, even when interacting with AI, will make the process smoother.
Secondly, candidates must become accustomed to the AI interview format. Unlike human interviews, there's no warm-up chit-chat or opportunity to build rapport. Practicing answers out loud is vital, as the chatbot needs to accurately record responses. Communication must be clear and descriptive, providing detailed information that a human interviewer might glean from facial expressions or tone. Utilizing online interview simulators can help candidates practice speaking into a camera, manage time limits, and structure answers effectively without the natural back-and-forth of a live conversation.
Thirdly, be prepared for behavioral questions. AI interviewers frequently ask candidates to provide concrete examples of how they handled specific work situations, complete with numbers and metrics. Vague answers are often scored poorly. Employing the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is highly recommended. Candidates should describe the specific situation, the task assigned, the action they took, and the quantifiable result, using numbers whenever possible to demonstrate impact.
Finally, the physical setup for video-based AI interviews remains important. Test audio and video in advance, ensure adequate and well-directed lighting on your face, and position your camera at eye level. Small adjustments, such as using a ring light or stacking books under a laptop, can enhance professionalism.
A critical warning for jobseekers is to avoid using AI shortcuts to generate answers during the interview. Such attempts are often detectable by both the AI interviewing tool and subsequent human reviewers, potentially leading to immediate disqualification. Some questions are intentionally convoluted to identify candidates who might be relying on external AI assistance. The best approach is to rely on one's own capabilities and provide genuine, well-prepared responses.
