WAFCON 2026 Host Revealed! CAF President Drops Major News

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, has officially confirmed that Morocco will proceed as the host nation for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026). This definitive announcement, made at a press conference following a recent Executive Committee meeting, effectively puts an end to prevailing speculations that had suggested a potential change in venue for the prestigious tournament.
Morocco boasts a commendable record in hosting major football events, having successfully staged the 2022 WAFCON. Their organizational prowess led to them being awarded the hosting rights for both the 2024 and 2026 tournaments back in 2024. Although the 2024 edition was subsequently rescheduled to 2025 due to an already congested football calendar, Morocco continued to demonstrate its high standards by providing world-class infrastructure and an excellent hosting experience, notably during the 2025 WAFCON finals where they competed against Nigeria.
Despite Morocco's proven capabilities, recent rumors had begun to circulate, especially in the wake of the controversy-marred 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hinting that the North African nation might relinquish its WAFCON hosting duties. These speculations gained considerable momentum when South Africa publicly indicated its readiness and interest to step in as an alternative host for the tournament. However, President Motsepe firmly addressed and dismissed these concerns, reaffirming Morocco's unwavering status as the designated host for WAFCON 2026.
During his comprehensive statement, President Motsepe underscored the significant competition among various nations to host CAF events and highlighted the stringent standards and tight timelines that must be adhered to. He explicitly mentioned that while several countries had expressed interest in hosting, many also requested alterations to the tournament dates. "We cannot change the dates because this tournament serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup," Motsepe stated emphatically, stressing the critical and non-negotiable role WAFCON 2026 plays in the global football calendar. The tournament is firmly scheduled to kick off on March 17 and conclude on April 3, 2026, maintaining its specific allocated window.
The stakes for the upcoming 2026 edition are exceptionally high, as it will serve as the official African qualifying route for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, set to take place in Brazil. The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Morocco to claim the 2025 title, will undoubtedly be eager and determined to defend their crown in what promises to be a highly anticipated and competitive tournament.
