Visa Snafu Halts J. Cole's Hoop Dreams in China

Rapper and Althete J. Cole recently added another professional basketball experience to his resume, playing his first and ultimately only game with the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on Saturday, April 11.
This followed his signing of a three-game contract with the Nanjing Monkey Kings on April 1.
Unfortunately, Cole's debut also marked his departure from the league for the time being.
In a blog post titled 'The Algorithm' on Sunday, April 12, he revealed that he had to leave China due to visa complications.
The process of obtaining a work visa in Hong Kong proved to be more time-consuming than anticipated, forcing him to return home after just a single match.
During his brief eight minutes on the court in his CBA debut, J. Cole did not manage to score any points.
Despite this, he conveyed profound gratitude to his team and the CBA for the invaluable opportunity.
He specifically thanked the Nanjing club, the league, and his 'mad cool' teammates who had hoped he would 'get a bucket!'
Cole expressed feeling 'fulfilled and grateful,' acknowledging that with more games, he might have gotten a few shots in.
Beyond the court, Cole shared his love for China, noting that it was the first time he and his family had the chance to experience the country.
He also extended appreciation to his music fans who attended the game, stating,
'I didn’t realize there were so many people in China that rocked with my music. Thank you to everybody who showed up and brought an album to sign.'
This stint with the CBA adds to Cole's impressive record of professional basketball appearances, making it the third professional league he has played in, following his time with the Basketball Africa League in 2021 and the Canadian Elite Basketball League in 2022.
This makes him one of the few musicians to have achieved such a level of professional athletic involvement.
Currently, Cole is taking a hiatus from sports to concentrate on his music career.
He is set to embark on 'The Fall-Off Tour' this summer, supporting his seventh studio album, 'The Fall-Off,' which marked his seventh album to top the Billboard 200 chart.
The tour is scheduled to commence on July 11 in Charlotte, N.C., and conclude on December 12 in Johannesburg, South Africa, spanning 15 countries.
Looking ahead, Cole has expressed a conditional interest in returning to the CBA.
He informed the team that if he could maintain his physical conditioning, he would be open to playing a longer series of games next year after his tour concludes.
He mused, 'I’m wildin…we’ll see,' leaving the door open for future athletic endeavors.
