Vegas Takes Over! Aces Crowned WNBA Champs, Parade Lights Up The Strip
The Las Vegas Aces jubilantly celebrated their third championship in four years with an extravagant parade down the iconic Las Vegas Strip on Friday night, marking eight years to the day since the San Antonio Stars relocated to the city and became the Aces. Owner Mark Davis, sporting a white satin team jacket, enthusiastically declared, "We're back! Las Vegas, we are world champions," from the stage at Toshiba Plaza outside T-Mobile Arena, signifying a new era of dominance for the franchise and the city.
Thousands of enthusiastic fans, many having arrived hours in advance, lined Las Vegas Boulevard from Tropicana Boulevard to witness the procession. The parade commenced with a captivating display of classic low-rider automobiles showcasing their intricate hydraulics, followed by five double-deck buses. The final bus carried the triumphant Aces, who showered the cheering crowd with streamers and confetti, transforming the historic Strip—a venue synonymous with legendary headliners since the 1960s Rat Pack era—into a vibrant stage for their own stardom. This celebration underscored the city's growing stature in professional sports, marking the fourth professional championship in Las Vegas since 2022, with the Aces securing three and the NHL's Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup in 2023.
The path to this championship was one of remarkable resilience and teamwork. The Aces navigated a challenging season start, beginning with a 14-14 record, and endured a pair of rugged playoff series before ultimately sweeping the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals. This journey demonstrated the team's ability to overcome adversity and peak at the most critical moments.
Head coach Becky Hammon, who has now completed her fourth season with the Aces, reflected on the season with deep gratitude. Wearing her signature hoodie blazer emblazoned with "GRATITUDE" in gold, Hammon remarked that this year's squad was her easiest to coach. "They came in and worked their tails off, no matter the circumstances," she stated, praising her team as "one of the most resilient, high-character groups." Her statement, "We should do it again next year," set an ambitious tone for the future.
The team's success was particularly noteworthy given its transformation. After losing several key players from their previous championship rosters, the Aces welcomed many new faces. It took nearly three months for the new configuration to fully "jell," but once they did, the team went on an impressive 16-game winning streak to conclude the regular season, securing the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Four-time MVP A'ja Wilson became visibly emotional when speaking about Coach Hammon's unwavering dedication to each player. "This is a special, special group; we prayed together and were popping champagne together," Wilson shared, adding, "She believed in us when no one did. We go nowhere without Becky Hammon." Midseason acquisition NaLyssa Smith, admitting her desire to keep her speech brief to avoid emotion, looked at her teammates and simply stated, "Y'all changed my life." Jackie Young, a veteran who has been part of all three championship teams and is known for her concise remarks, echoed the sentiment of ambition with a confident mic drop, declaring, "Just know, we not done yet." First-year Ace and three-time WNBA champion Jewell Loyd encapsulated the excitement, saying, "Now this is a parade."
The triumphant celebration culminated with a dazzling display of confetti and fireworks illuminating the Las Vegas sky, set to the iconic anthem, Queen's "We Are The Champions." The festivities also featured live performances by musical acts Crime Mob, Ludacris, and Mya, adding to the electrifying atmosphere of a night truly befitting world champions.
