Almost 2,000 products, encompassing food, cosmetics, drugs, and pet food, are currently under recall in Indiana, Minnesota, and North Dakota. This widespread recall was initiated by Gold Star Distribution, Inc. in late December after it was discovered that these items were stored in an unsanitary facility. The conditions included significant contamination from rodent waste and bird droppings, posing serious health risks to consumers.
The unsanitary storage conditions present potential dangers such as Salmonella infections, although no illnesses have been reported to date. In January, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designated this a Class II recall. This classification indicates that while the likelihood of severe health effects is low, there is still a possibility of temporary or reversible adverse health consequences.
A wide array of popular products from major brands are affected by this recall. The recalled categories and some prominent brands include: Beverages like Diet Coke, Sprite, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Arizona Iced Tea, Gatorade, Red Bull, Snapple, and Canada Dry. Candy features Hershey’s, Reese’s, Kit Kat, Snickers, M&M’s, Skittles, Starburst, Sour Patch Kids, Haribo, Swedish Fish, Jolly Rancher, and Mike and Ike. Salty snacks include Pringles, Takis, and Chex Mix. Pantry staples such as Cheerios, Quaker, Chef Boyardee, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Ragu, Heinz, and Hunt’s are also impacted. Medications affected are Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Excedrin, Pepto-Bismol, Benadryl, NyQuil, DayQuil, and Tums. Personal care products listed are Colgate, Crest, Vaseline, Always, Tampax, Trojan, Dove, and Axe. Finally, Pet food brands like Purina, Friskies, Meow Mix, and Fancy Feast are also part of the recall. The full list of products and retailers where they were sold is available on the FDA's website.
The FDA strongly advises customers to immediately destroy any of the affected products they may possess. Gold Star Distribution, Inc. is offering refunds, and customers can contact the company at 612-617-9800 for more information. Should consumers experience any health problems after using or consuming a recalled product, they should seek medical attention. Similarly, pet owners concerned about their pets consuming impacted animal foods are encouraged to contact their veterinarian. Adverse reactions can also be reported directly on the FDA's website.
