Ukraine Strikes Deep: Drones Target Russian Oil Refineries in Escalating Energy War

Ukraine has continued its strategic targeting of Russia's energy industry, carrying out strikes on two Russian oil refineries on Saturday night. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed these operations, stating that his forces successfully hit the Slavyansk oil refinery in the Krasnodar Krai region and another refinery in the Yaroslavl region.

In a post on X, President Zelenskyy emphasized the objective of these attacks: "We continue our operations that weaken Russia’s ability to wage this war." He added that "Each of our long-range sanctions means fewer resources serving Russia’s war machine, and another step toward peace." Zelenskyy also shared video footage that appeared to show the aftermath of the strikes, depicting huge plumes of black smoke and fire visible in the distance.

Earlier reports from the Krasnodar Krai region's Emergency Operations Centre had confirmed a fire at the refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban. The center stated that the blaze was caused by falling drone debris, which also resulted in damage to a power line in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.

These recent strikes are part of a broader campaign by Kyiv, which has significantly ramped up attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure in recent months. Ukrainian forces have been systematically targeting various oil facilities, including refineries, terminals, and depots, with the aim of disrupting one of Russia's most critical sources of income. The intensified attacks have reportedly led to a noticeable fuel crisis in certain parts of Russia and Russian-occupied territories, characterized by long queues at petrol stations and limited fuel supply.

The offensive operations come in the context of ongoing hostilities. Ukraine's air force reported that local air defenses had successfully shot down six Russian ballistic missiles, one anti-ship missile, and 125 drones overnight. Despite these defensive successes, the service noted that one missile and 14 attack drones managed to strike 11 different locations. President Zelenskyy also highlighted the scale of recent Russian aggression, stating that Russia had launched 1,400 attack drones, nearly 1,500 guided aerial bombs, and 19 missiles against Ukraine over the past week, impacting 15 regions across the country.
