Ugo Ugochukwu Speeds to Victory! Nigerian-American Driver Dominates F3 Season Opener

Nigerian-American racing prodigy Ugo Ugochukwu achieved a significant milestone in his career, securing his first-ever FIA Formula 3 victory during the season-opening Feature Race in Melbourne on March 8, 2026. The 18-year-old, representing Campos Racing, demonstrated remarkable composure and raw pace at Albert Park, cementing his status as one of motorsport's most exciting talents.

Starting from second position on the grid, Ugochukwu faced a tricky start, briefly dropping to third as the lights went out. However, showcasing true champion's resolve, he quickly fought his way back to second by the second lap. Shortly thereafter, he executed a clinical overtake at Turn 9, snatching the lead from his teammate, Théophile Naël. From that point, Ugochukwu was in a league of his own, controlling the 23-lap race with such precision that he built a substantial seven-second lead. Despite a late Safety Car period that saw the race conclude under yellow flags, Ugochukwu crossed the finish line comfortably, taking the chequered flag and the top spot on the podium.

After his triumphant win, Ugochukwu expressed his satisfaction, stating, “The Feature Race done here in Melbourne, managed to come away with a win, so super pleased, my first win in F3. It’s been a perfect start to the season, we have been quick all weekend. P2 off the line, fell back a little at the start but managed to make my way back through to the lead and from there I had a nice gap until the last Safety Car. Super happy and thank you to the whole team.”

This victory in Melbourne adds to an already impressive run for Ugochukwu, who just last month sealed the 2026 Formula Regional Oceania Championship title in early February. His recent successes highlight his consistent performance and rapid ascent in the junior racing categories. With this win, Ugochukwu now leads the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship after Round 1 with 25 points, placing him ahead of competitors Freddie Slater and Bruno del Pino, both of whom have 18 points.

Born in New York City on April 23, 2007, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi. While he races under the American flag, his Nigerian heritage remains a strong point of connection. His latest achievement further solidifies his position as a rising star to watch in the world of motorsport.
