Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom Mourns King Oyo After 34-Year Reign

The Tooro Kingdom is mourning the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on Thursday night at the age of 34, bringing an end to a remarkable reign that began when he was just three years old.

Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed that the monarch died at about 10 p.m., describing his passing as a profound loss to the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.

The announcement followed hours of conflicting reports about his health in the United States, with the kingdom earlier confirming that he was critically ill and urging the public to disregard unverified reports of his death.

Born on April 16, 1992, King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne on September 12, 1995, succeeding his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He formally assumed full operational control of the kingdom after turning 18 in 2010 and subsequently became associated with initiatives spanning education, healthcare, tourism, environmental conservation and youth empowerment.

His unusually long reign, which began in childhood, made him one of the most prominent young monarchs in the world and positioned his transition into adulthood as an important chapter in Tooro's modern history.

With the kingdom now entering a period of mourning, attention has shifted towards the succession process and the future of the institution King Oyo led for more than three decades.

The Prime Minister has assured the Abatooro that the monarchy's continuity is secure, saying the late king left behind a prince who is expected to succeed him, although the heir's identity will be announced at the appropriate time in accordance with Tooro customs.

For now, the kingdom has called for calm, unity and prayer as it prepares for the traditional mourning rites and the eventual transition to a new monarch.
