Uganda Promises Arts Teachers Pay Rise at Kings College Buddo 120th Anniversary

Kings College Buddo, one of Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, marked its 120th anniversary with grand celebrations attended by Vice President Jessica Alupo and other dignitaries.

Founded in 1906 to educate princes and chiefs, the school has grown into a national institution serving over 2,000 students from across Uganda and beyond.

The celebrations began with a thanksgiving service led by Moses Banja, who praised the institution’s resilience and its enduring role in shaping generations of leaders over more than a century.

During the event, Vice President Alupo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Arts teachers, announcing plans to increase their salaries by up to 25 percent while consultations continue.

She commended the school’s holistic education model rooted in faith, discipline, and leadership, noting its contribution to nurturing responsible citizens and academic excellence.

Alupo also praised the collaboration between the Buganda Kingdom, the Church, and government authorities in sustaining quality education at the institution, assuring continued support.

Bishop Banja, while celebrating the school’s legacy, raised concerns about growing corruption, particularly allegations of jobs being bought during recruitment processes, urging merit-based employment as essential for building a just society.

Representing the Buganda Kingdom, Minister for Lands and Properties Daudi Mpanga expressed pride in the institution’s legacy of grooming leaders, while the presence of 104-year-old alumnus Norah Namakula Muyinda highlighted the school’s long-standing impact.

Vice President Alupo also welcomed newly appointed headteacher Godfrey Kasamba, urging him to uphold the school’s distinguished traditions while guiding students toward discipline and academic excellence.

The anniversary further recognized notable figures, including former headteacher John Fred Kazibwe, as stakeholders expressed optimism for the future and pledged continued commitment to preserving the institution’s legacy while adapting to modern educational demands.
