A High Court in Kano has delivered a judgment of death by hanging for two men, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, following their conviction for the murder of newly married Yazid Haruna during a robbery attack. The convicts were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.

The incident occurred in the early hours of June 11, 2025, at approximately2:47 am, in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano. The two men conspired and armed themselves with long knives and machetes before launching their attack on the victim.

During the assault, they robbed Haruna of two mobile phones andN19,500, subsequently stabbing him multiple times in the stomach, chest, and head, which tragically led to his death.

The prosecution presented a compelling case, supported by testimony from three witnesses and critical medical reports. Despite the defendants denying the charges, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu meticulously reviewed all evidence presented before the court.

The defense lawyer, Barrister Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, presented the defendants to testify in their own defense and pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

In her judgment, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu firmly stated that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. She described the actions of the defendants as cold, calculated, and devoid of any humanity, leaving a newly married man's family shattered and a community deeply shaken.

The judge ruled that no mitigating circumstances were sufficient to override the gravity of the crime committed. Both Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya were formally sentenced to death by hanging, in accordance with Nigerian law governing capital offences.

The case has drawn widespread attention across Kano, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime. Authorities hope the ruling will act as a deterrent and reinforce public confidence in the justice system's ability to deliver accountability.
