TUI Cruises Sets Sail for Southern Africa's First Full Winter Season!

German cruise operator TUI Cruises has announced a significant expansion of its global presence, particularly focusing on Southern African waters for the winter 2027/28 season. This strategic move underscores the growing appeal of the African continent as a burgeoning cruise destination and creates substantial new opportunities for travel professionals across the region.
Starting in November 2027, TUI Cruises will deploy its vessel, Mein Schiff 5, to Southern African waters for an entire winter season. This marks a first for the brand, demonstrating a commitment to the region. The ship will operate a series of fourteen-day roundtrip voyages, with Cape Town serving as the departure and return port. These itineraries are designed to connect South Africa with some of the most sought-after island destinations in the Indian Ocean.
Passengers on these voyages will experience a diverse array of ports. South African coastal cities such as Gqeberha, Durban, and Richards Bay are included, each offering unique attractions and cultural experiences. The international calls will feature the tropical islands of Mauritius and La Réunion, adding an exotic Indian Ocean flavor to the journey. Additionally, some sailings are expected to incorporate Namibian ports, either as part of repositioning cruises or longer itineraries, thus expanding the geographical scope to include Namibia's dramatic Atlantic coastline and its unique wildlife.
This development holds considerable significance for African travel professionals. The deployment reinforces Cape Town's burgeoning status as a key turnaround port for international cruise operations. Unlike simple port calls, turnaround operations mean passengers begin and end their voyages in the city, generating substantial economic benefits through pre-cruise hotel stays, airport transfers, local tours, and various other ancillary services. South Africa's strategic location between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, combined with its continually improving cruise infrastructure, positions it as an increasingly attractive hub for operators repositioning vessels between hemispheres.
Beyond Southern Africa, TUI Cruises' winter 2027/28 global deployment strategy is extensive. Multiple Mein Schiff vessels will be positioned across key markets worldwide, including the Caribbean, Canary Islands, Asia, and Northern Europe, showcasing the operator's ambition for diverse itineraries.
In the Caribbean, several Mein Schiff vessels will offer both roundtrip and repositioning cruises, connecting North American gateways with popular island destinations. These routes will feature calls at locations such as Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Martinique, and Antigua.
The Asian market is also slated for continued expansion. Mein Schiff 6 is scheduled to reposition via Africa before embarking on two-week cruises in Southeast Asia. Destinations in this region will include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, catering to travelers seeking cultural immersion and exotic experiences.
Closer to Europe, the Canary Islands will host two vessels, providing island-hopping itineraries ranging from seven to eleven nights. These sailings will visit Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Madeira, and Fuerteventura, with additional calls expected in Morocco, the Azores, and Cape Verde.
Pricing across this extensive winter program will vary based on itinerary length and destination. Entry-level fares for shorter Canary Islands cruises are anticipated to start from approximately seven hundred euros. The African sailings, due to their longer duration and more exotic routing, will command premium pricing, reflecting the unique experiences they offer. As further itinerary details and booking information become available, African travel industry professionals are advised to familiarize themselves with these product offerings. The cruise sector continues to demonstrate robust growth potential across the continent, promising significant benefits for those positioned to capitalize on this increasing demand in the seasons ahead.
