Train Travellers Stunned as Woman Box Dyes Hair Mid-Commute: 'Zero Shame!'

An unconventional incident on public transport has captured widespread attention online, sparking debate about etiquette and personal boundaries in shared spaces. Vera, a woman who describes herself as "Type B," stunned fellow passengers and social media users by deciding to dye her hair on a train during her commute. She subsequently shared her experience in a now-viral TikTok video, showcasing the entire process.
Vera documented herself meticulously applying box dye to her curly locks while seated in the train carriage, all on her way to a hair appointment. She explained, "I'm so Type B, I dyed my hair ON THE WAY to my hair appointment." After the initial application, she moved to the train's toilet to complete the dyeing process. However, her impromptu salon session led to an "epic mess," with dye visible on her shoulders and even on the wall of the train toilet. Despite the noticeable cleanup required, Vera maintained a lighthearted attitude, captioning her video, "This was so embarrassing but I was not embarrassed."
The decision to undertake such a personal grooming activity in a public, confined space quickly drew both criticism and support. Many commenters on TikTok expressed outrage, primarily focusing on the strong chemicals typically found in box hair dye. Concerns were raised about the potent fumes, which can be particularly problematic in enclosed environments and for individuals with respiratory issues like sinus problems, allergies, or for children present on the train. Critics questioned her "consideration for others," arguing that "the tube and public spaces already have appalling air quality as it is" and that such chemicals "aren’t meant for confined spaces." Some even suggested potential legal ramifications due to allergic reactions.
Conversely, a segment of the online community defended Vera's actions, commending her for making efficient use of her travel time. Supporters resonated with the sentiment of being busy and needing to multitask, with comments such as, "You know what? I respect it. Go ahead babe!" and "As she should - like we are we wasting 20 minutes on the train when we can do so much! We are busy - girls gotta do what a girl’s gotta do." This divide highlighted differing views on personal freedom versus collective responsibility in public settings.
The incident gained further traction when another passenger, Micaela, independently shared her perspective on TikTok. Micaela captured Vera applying the dye, expressing her initial disbelief: "I'm all for a quick make-up top up on the tube but this woman was full on box dyeing her hair! Couldn’t believe it at first when she started to mix up her potions. Surely she wasn’t gonna apply it? I stand corrected!" Micaela even tagged Transport for London in her caption, drawing official attention to the event. Interestingly, Vera herself commented on Micaela's video, confirming, "OMG, this is me!" to which Micaela playfully replied, "Girl!! You are iconic, you had me creasing!"
This train-based hair dyeing escapade has undeniably become a talking point, emphasizing the evolving norms of public behavior in the age of social media and the diverse reactions that such bold acts can provoke, ranging from admonishment for lacking decorum to admiration for efficiency and unapologetic self-expression.
