A tragic collision between a passenger bus and a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train at a level crossing in Chiredzi has resulted in the deaths of nine people and left at least 25 others injured. The devastating incident occurred on Tuesday morning, around 0700hrs, when an NRZ train traveling from Triangle to the Lundi siding collided with the passenger bus. This accident has once again brought to the forefront critical concerns regarding road safety and strict adherence to level crossing regulations across Zimbabwe.

Preliminary investigations into the crash point to the bus driver's failure to observe essential level crossing regulations. Andrew Kunambura, NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager, stated that drivers are required to stop and check for oncoming trains before proceeding at such crossings. This critical lapse in safety protocol is believed to be the primary cause of the fatal impact.

Among the nine confirmed fatalities, seven were adults and two were minors, all of whom died at the scene of the accident. Additionally, 25 passengers sustained various injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) later reported 26 injured victims, indicating a slightly higher count of those affected.

Immediate response saw emergency services, including the police, ambulance personnel, and the fire brigade, rapidly deployed to the scene to conduct a comprehensive rescue operation. Their swift actions were crucial in attending to the injured and securing the accident site following the severe collision.

In the wake of the tragedy, Mr. Kunambura on behalf of the NRZ, expressed profound condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. He also conveyed wishes for a speedy recovery to all the injured passengers, emphasizing the somber impact of the event on the community.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officially confirmed the fatal road traffic accident, noting it occurred at 0843 hours along Mbizi Road in Triangle, Masvingo Province. The ZRP announced that investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing, and further details will be communicated as they become available.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of exercising extreme caution and strictly adhering to all safety procedures at railway crossings.
