Tragedy Strikes Ha Long Bay: Tourist Boat Sinks, 34 Feared Dead
A tragic maritime disaster unfolded in Vietnam's iconic Ha Long Bay on Saturday, July 19, 2025, when a tourist boat carrying families capsized during a sudden and severe storm. The incident, which occurred in the UNESCO World Heritage site, has resulted in a significant loss of life, with state media reports confirming at least 34 fatalities.
The vessel was transporting 48 passengers and five crew members when it succumbed to the intense weather conditions. Most of those on board were families visiting from the capital Hanoi, including more than 20 children, underscoring the profound tragedy for many households. Immediate rescue efforts saw border guards successfully rescue 11 individuals, but as of reports, eight people remained missing, prompting search operations to continue into the night.
Eyewitnesses described the rapid deterioration of the weather. Tran Trong Hung, an office worker in Ha Long Bay, recounted to AFP that the sky dramatically darkened around 2 p.m. local time, followed by hailstones described as being "as big as toes," torrential rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. This severe storm came on the heels of three days of intense heat, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius in certain areas. Despite the ferocity, the director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, Mai Van Khiem, clarified that these thunderstorms in northern Vietnam were not linked to Tropical Storm Wipha in the South China Sea.
A poignant account came from a 10-year-old boy who was among the rescued. He shared with state media outlet VietnamNet, "I took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived, then swam up. I even shouted for help, then I was pulled up by a boat with soldiers."
In response to the calamity, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended his condolences to the affected families and issued an urgent directive to the defence and public security ministries to expedite search and rescue operations. A statement on the government website indicated that authorities would "investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations." Beyond Ha Long Bay, torrential rain also lashed other northern provinces, including Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, and Bac Ninh, with strong winds in the capital toppling several trees.
Ha Long Bay is renowned globally as one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations, attracting millions annually to its distinctive blue-green waters and limestone islands topped with rainforests. This is not the first time the region has faced maritime challenges due to adverse weather; just last year, 30 vessels sank in boat lock areas within coastal Quang Ninh province along Ha Long Bay after Typhoon Yagi brought powerful winds and waves.
