Tragedy Strikes Christmas Music: 'Driving Home For Christmas' Singer Chris Rea Dies at 74

Chris Rea, the revered British blues rocker, has passed away at the age of 74. The news was shared by his family on his official Instagram page on Monday, December 22, stating that he died peacefully following a short illness. The family acknowledged his profound musical impact, noting that his songs had created the soundtrack to countless lives, ensuring his legacy would endure.
Rea's extensive career spanned five decades, during which he released two dozen albums. He achieved significant success in the United Kingdom, with two of his albums, 1989’s The Road to Hell and 1991’s Auberge, reaching the No. 1 spot on the U.K. albums charts. In the U.S. market, his 1978 soft rock hit “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)” climbed to No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, earning him his sole Grammy nomination in 1979 for Best New Artist.
Another of Rea's most cherished tracks is the melancholic 1986 ballad “Driving Home For Christmas.” This seasonally appropriate song recounts a wintry journey home for the holidays, a personal reflection penned while Rea himself was navigating snowy traffic back from Abbey Road Studios in London, yearning for the warmth of home.
