Tragedy Strikes: Arise News Anchor Shot Dead in Abuja Robbery

The Nigerian media industry is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a prominent news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel. Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie,” was killed in an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe district of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025. She was 29 years old at the time of her passing, having been born on December 26, 1995.
Sommie was a cherished and vibrant voice on Nigerian television, widely admired for her professional delivery and warm on-screen presence, which engaged and connected with viewers. Beyond her esteemed role in broadcasting, she was also a trained lawyer, showcasing her diverse talents and dedication. Colleagues remembered her as a professional, supportive colleague, and a friend to many.
ARISE News Channel released a statement, with Hadiza Usman-Ajayi speaking on behalf of the management, confirming the devastating loss. The statement expressed profound shock and grief, extending deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones. “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read, highlighting the significant void her untimely passing has left within the newsroom and the broader media community.
The Nigeria Police have swiftly commenced an investigation into the robbery and killing. ARISE News Channel has called for a “speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits” responsible for this heinous crime. Her death adds to the rising cases of insecurity in the country, deeply impacting the lives of many and leaving the industry in profound shock.
