Tragedy on Abuja Highway: Truck Rampage Leaves 12 Dead in Horrific Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a tragic multiple vehicle road traffic crash that resulted in the death of twelve persons at Gada Biyu, situated along the critical Yangoji–Abuja (YGJ–ABJ) corridor. This devastating incident, which involved four vehicles, occurred on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at approximately 11:45 am. The vehicles implicated in the crash included a commercial trailer carrying coal, a commercial bus, and two commercial cars, painting a grim picture of the collision scene.
According to a statement issued by Segun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer for the FRSC, preliminary investigations into the incident point towards severe traffic violations as the root cause. Ogungbemide stated that the crash was likely a direct consequence of speed violation and dangerous driving, which ultimately led to the loss of control by one of the drivers.
Further detailed information gathered by the FRSC corroborated these initial findings, specifically indicating that the driver of the commercial trailer was operating at an excessive speed, well beyond the legally mandated limit for that particular corridor. This irresponsible speed resulted in the driver losing control of the heavy vehicle, causing it to crash into vehicles that were already parked, thereby triggering the catastrophic chain of events that culminated in the fatal collision.
The scale of the tragedy is significant, with a total of eighteen persons involved in the multi-vehicle crash. Of these, five victims tragically lost their lives instantly at the scene of the accident. Seven other individuals, who were successfully rescued and promptly conveyed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, later succumbed to their severe injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to a distressing twelve.
In addition to the fatalities, Ogungbemide confirmed that three other victims sustained injuries of varying severity. These injuries encompassed bruises, cuts, fractures, and head injuries, and the affected individuals are currently receiving necessary medical treatment. The FRSC continues its efforts to manage the aftermath and investigate the precise circumstances surrounding this lamentable incident, emphasizing the critical importance of adherence to road safety regulations to prevent such occurrences in the future.
