Tinubu Administration Launches GAMCO Committee to Overhaul Power Sector

President Bola Tinubu has established an 11-member committee to facilitate the smooth incorporation of the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO), part of his administration’s broader reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The committee was inaugurated in Abuja by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, acting on behalf of the President. The creation of GAMCO had earlier received approval from the Federal Executive Council.
Gbajabiamila emphasized that GAMCO is intended as a fast-track solution to persistent challenges, including stranded power, transmission inefficiencies, and grid bottlenecks.
The committee’s remit includes a comprehensive review of existing laws, regulations, policies, and frameworks across the electricity value chain—generation, transmission, distribution, and market operations.
Particular focus will be given to assets from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), including the Omotosho, Olorunshogo, and Ihovbor plants, earmarked for GAMCO’s pilot phase.
The committee chair is Femi Gbajabiamila. Members include the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ministers of Power, Works, Finance, Communication & Digital Economy, Science, Technology & Innovation, Aviation & Aerospace Development, the Minister of State (Petroleum), Nigerian Revenue Service Chairman, and energy expert Professor Yemi Oke.
The committee’s secretary is Dr. John Chidiebere Ezeamama, Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office.
While GAMCO represents a major step in streamlining Nigeria’s power sector, stakeholders have raised concerns about potential overlaps with existing agencies like the Nigeria Integrated System Operator (NISO) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The committee is tasked with addressing these issues to ensure alignment with President Tinubu’s vision for a more efficient and reliable national grid.
