Tinubu's Decisive Hand: Rivers Crisis Bows to Presidential Intervention

The political landscape of Rivers State was plunged into what was described as a “very, very unfortunate state of emergency” due to a public and significant fallout between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This crisis, which garnered national attention, highlighted deep-seated tensions within the state's political hierarchy.
Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Rivers State in the 2023 general elections, revealed that the resolution of this contentious dispute was solely due to the decisive intervention of President Bola Tinubu. Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Morning Brief,’ Cole emphasized that without the President weighing in, there would have been no pathway to reconciliation between the warring factions.
The President’s intervention eventually led to a reconciliation between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike. However, Cole pointed out that this peace came at a cost, leaving Governor Fubara in a politically constrained position. Despite the apparent resolution, the underlying dynamics of power and influence continued to shape the Governor’s ability to act independently.
Recent political developments suggest a troubling regression, according to Cole. He noted that Governor Fubara appears to be back in a scenario reminiscent of when he first assumed office, finding himself “totally surrounded and could not take decisions by himself.” This situation, which Cole termed the “status quo,” was precisely the catalyst that ignited Fubara’s initial clash with Wike.
Looking forward, Cole asserted that Governor Fubara now faces a critical juncture. He must decide whether to accept the challenging status quo that he previously fought against, or brace himself for another inevitable political confrontation. The choice, according to Cole, rests entirely with the Governor, and only he can reveal his next course of action in navigating the intricate political currents of Rivers State.
