Timothée Chalamet's 'Marty Supreme' Wows NYFF: 'Career-Best' Performance Sparks Standing Ovation

The 63rd New York Film Festival hosted a significant cinematic event with the surprise world premiere of Josh Safdie’s highly anticipated A24 film, “Marty Supreme.” Timothée Chalamet, the film's star, made an unexpected appearance on Monday night at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, introduced by director Josh Safdie. Chalamet expressed his thrill to debut the film in New York, citing a personal connection to the city: “I went to high school down the street,” referring to LaGuardia High School, and adding, “This is fucking awesome to be here.” Safdie, recognized as a quintessential New York filmmaker, also revealed the challenging timeline for the premiere, stating, “I finished it at 2 a.m. yesterday. … You’re the first audience to see this film.”
Set in the 1950s, “Marty Supreme” is an A24 sports dramedy that chronicles the journey of young table-tennis prodigy Marty Mauser, portrayed by Chalamet, as he determinedly chases his dream of becoming a champion, even to the extent of venturing overseas. The film's synopsis hints at Mauser’s “hell and back” quest for greatness against a backdrop where his aspirations are often overlooked. The impressive ensemble cast supporting Chalamet includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler Okonma (professionally known as Tyler, the Creator), Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher. Safdie co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein.
Following the screening, during the cast introductions, Tyler, the Creator, who plays a supporting role, passionately lauded Safdie's directorial skill. Okonma, known primarily for his music, articulated his profound trust in Safdie: “I play piano and put on cool clothes — I do not act at all. And this man is so good, that I trusted him and said, ‘Anything you need. I don’t want to read this script. I will show up and be there.’” He further conveyed his gratitude, saying, “I got emotional up there because you gave me a chance, so I thank you.”
The premiere received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both film critics and attendees, with “Marty Supreme” earning a standing ovation. Critics hailed the film as an “awe-inspiring cinematic tour-de-force” and a “kinetic odyssey.” Ramin Setoodeh of Variety acclaimed it as “‘Uncut Gems’ meets ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ meets ‘Jerry Maguire,’ carried by Timothée Chalamet’s best performance yet.” Discussing Film chairman Diego Andaluz echoed this sentiment, calling it “Safdie’s best film yet” and a “deranged cross between ‘Catch Me If You Can’ & ‘Uncut Gems,’” with Chalamet delivering “the performance of a lifetime.” David Canfield of The Hollywood Reporter declared Chalamet’s portrayal of Marty Mauser a “career-best performance,” while entertainment journalist David Crow praised it as “an absolute blast of adrenaline and the follow-up to ‘Uncut Gems’ we’ve been craving.” Matt Neglia of @NextBestPicture characterized it as “a sprawling and electrifying sports epic bursting with vitality,” and Anne Thompson of @akstanwyck likened Chalamet's no-holds-barred performance to his “Wolf of Wall Street” moment, predicting a nomination.
“Marty Supreme” is slated as A24’s significant Christmas release, with an opening date in theaters on December 25. Reportedly, it stands as one of A24’s most expensive original productions to date, boasting a budget of $70 million. The film also generated considerable buzz during production, notably with Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow photographed in a passionate kissing scene. Paltrow disclosed to Vanity Fair that her character engages in “a lot of sex” with Chalamet’s character in the movie, and they even instructed the film’s intimacy coordinator to “step back a little” during production, finding it somewhat “stifling” as artists. The widespread critical and audience acclaim at the New York Film Festival firmly establishes “Marty Supreme” as a major awards contender and an essential cinematic experience.
