Timberwolves Secure Star: Jaden McDaniels Inks Massive $40M Extension!
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels has agreed to a significant extension, committing him to the team through the 2029-30 season for a total of $124 million over the next four years. This deal follows his career-best 2025-26 season, where his all-around game and crucial playoff performances solidified his role as a core player alongside Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert.
Minnesota Timberwolves All-Defensive forward Jaden McDaniels has secured a significant new contract, agreeing to an extension that will keep him with the team through the 2029-30 season. This new agreement, reported by agents Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball to ESPN's Shams Charania, specifically involves a one-year, $40 million extension. With this latest commitment, the Timberwolves now have a substantial $124 million invested in the 26-year-old forward over the next four years, solidifying his long-term presence on the roster.
The extension provides McDaniels with considerable future flexibility. He will have the opportunity to negotiate another extension as early as 2028, potentially starting at a salary of up to 140% of his $40 million annual figure. Alternatively, he could opt to enter free agency in the summer of 2030, at which point he would be a 10-year veteran, offering diverse paths for his career progression. This new agreement builds upon his previous five-year, $136 million deal signed in 2023, underscoring the team's belief in his continued development and value.
McDaniels is coming off a stellar 2025-26 season, which marked a career year across multiple statistical categories. He averaged career highs of 14.8 points on an impressive 51.5% shooting from the field, including 41% from three-point range. Beyond his scoring, he contributed significantly with 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game, showcasing his all-around impact on both ends of the court.
His elevated performance extended into the playoffs, where McDaniels further raised his game. He averaged 16.3 points on 44% shooting, notably delivering a crucial 32-point performance in Game 6. This standout effort was instrumental in helping the Timberwolves eliminate the Denver Nuggets in the first round, demonstrating his ability to perform under high-pressure situations and contribute significantly to team victories.
Since being selected by the Wolves with the No. 28 pick in the 2020 NBA draft, McDaniels has evolved into an indispensable component of the team's core. Alongside star players Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, and the newly acquired LaMelo Ball, McDaniels serves as the team's premier perimeter defender. His defensive prowess was highlighted last season by having the fourth-most defensive matchups against 2026 All-Stars, according to GeniusIQ, underscoring his elite ability to guard top-tier offensive talent.
Beyond his defensive reputation, McDaniels' offensive output has shown a consistent upward trend in recent years. This growth has not gone unnoticed by his teammates; prior to the start of the current season, Anthony Edwards publicly expressed his expectation that McDaniels would achieve All-Star status this season, signaling the high regard in which he is held within the organization and the league.
