Thunderbolts on the Brink: OKC's Dramatic Push for NBA Finals

The Oklahoma City Thunder moved one step closer to their second consecutive NBA Finals appearance, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. This victory gives the Thunder a commanding 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, positioning them just one win away from clinching their berth.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder's charge, overcoming a difficult start to deliver a game-high 32 points. After missing his initial four shots, Gilgeous-Alexander quickly found his rhythm, scoring five consecutive points that helped erase an early eight-point deficit for Oklahoma City. Despite shooting 7-for-19 from the field, his efficiency at the free-throw line was crucial, as he converted 16 of 17 attempts. Reflecting on his slow start, Gilgeous-Alexander commented, "If there were four or five of me out there, we’d have been down 20 after the first quarter. I probably shouldn’t start like that again.”

Beyond Gilgeous-Alexander's stellar performance, other Thunder players also stepped up. Jared McCain, replacing Cason Wallace in the starting lineup, contributed 20 points, with 18 of those coming after halftime following an initial shaky start. Alex Caruso also had a strong outing, scoring 22 points, a significant bounce back after being scoreless in Game 4. The Thunder established an 11-point lead by halftime and solidified their control with a decisive 9-0 run to open the third quarter.

For the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama tallied 20 points and six rebounds. Notably, his rebounding numbers have dipped significantly in the latter part of the series, having secured only 18 total rebounds over the last three games after averaging 20.5 in the first two. Stephon Castle led the Spurs in scoring with 24 points, while Julian Champagnie added 22 points to their effort.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will now have the opportunity to secure their NBA Finals spot in Game 6, which is scheduled for Thursday evening in San Antonio (01:30 Friday). Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference finals, the New York Knicks have already advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years, sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0.
