Terror Hunt: ISIS Commander Al-Minuki's Death Confirmed in Joint US-Nigerian Operation Amidst Identity Confusion

A meticulously planned and highly coordinated joint military operation between Nigeria and the United States has successfully eliminated Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, a prominent ISIS top commander and reportedly the group's second-in-command globally. The operation, which took place on May 16, 2026, was confirmed by both US President Donald Trump and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, marking a significant victory in the ongoing fight against transnational terrorism.
The Presidency, through spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, and the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), represented by Major General Samaila Uba, provided extensive details regarding the precision and intelligence-driven nature of the mission. The operation was the culmination of months of sustained Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) activities, supported by sophisticated digital surveillance, human intelligence, and communications intercepts that began as far back as December 2025. Security sources meticulously monitored Al-Minuki's movements across various locations in northern Nigeria, including Abuja and Maiduguri, with an initial aim to capture him alive.
Details emerging from the New York Times indicate that the operation involved a helicopter-borne assault by approximately two dozen Nigerian and American special operations commandos, including members of the Navy's SEAL Team 6. These forces engaged Al-Minuki and around three dozen fighters on two small islands in the Lake Chad Basin, a region critical in the battle against jihadist insurgency. Al-Minuki was ultimately killed in an air strike after it became evident he would not surrender, thereby preventing his escape. No American or Nigerian military casualties were reported, and several of Al-Minuki's lieutenants were also eliminated. Critical intelligence, including cell phones, laptops, and other electronic records, was recovered to provide insights into ISIS's recruitment, operational, and financial activities across Africa and beyond.
The successful elimination of Al-Minuki addressed previous controversies surrounding earlier 2024 reports that mistakenly listed him among insurgents killed during operations in Kaduna State, specifically around the Birnin Gwari forest axis. Both the Presidency and DHQ clarified that these earlier claims were cases of mistaken identity or misattribution. Onanuga explained that intelligence later confirmed the Birnin Gwari operational theatre was never within Al-Minuki's established area of activity. Major General Uba further elucidated that the use of similar names, aliases, and 'nom de guerres' is a common indoctrination strategy among ISWAP and Boko Haram commanders to deliberately obscure their identities.
