Atoms is essentially a rebranded holding company that has emerged from Kalanick's post-Uber venture, Cloud Kitchens, a ghost kitchen operation. The new name was unveiled in March, alongside Kalanick's announcement of acquiring Pronto, a heavy industry automation firm previously led by his former Uber colleague, Anthony Levandowski. Kalanick has expressed ambitions for Atoms to expand into the mining sector, pushing beyond Pronto's existing vehicle automation capabilities within that industry. Prior reports also indicated Kalanick's interest in acquiring the U.S. division of Chinese self-driving vehicle company Pony AI, potentially with Uber's backing, though these discussions reportedly concluded in March.

In a post on X regarding the fundraise, Kalanick alluded to the deeper significance of this investment, stating, "On many levels, this round is a bit of unfinished business. Fuel to complete the bits-to-atoms story arc we started at Uber, continued at CloudKitchens and will now finish at Atoms." He articulated his long-standing journey to digitize the physical world, which began 16 years ago, aiming to understand, predict, and control it with software. He envisions building "atoms-based" computers, where manufacturing acts as the CPU, real estate serves as storage, and transportation functions as the network. Kalanick's ultimate goal with Atoms is to create a "wheelbase for robots."

Ben Horowitz, in a concurrent post, enthusiastically declared, "Travis is Back." He lauded Kalanick as a rare kind of entrepreneur capable of transforming "old-school, heavy parts of our economy," emphasizing his "gritty work ethic, drive, and range" spanning from software architecture to mechanical engineering. Horowitz further elucidated that Atoms' core mission would revolve around enhancing human productivity in the physical world. He believes the most valuable application of AI and robotics lies in replicating Uber's impact on transportation or computers' impact on the digital world: making "everything and everyone more productive."

While Kalanick did not detail specific projects, it is anticipated that a substantial portion of the newly acquired funding will be allocated to hiring. He emphasized the monumental challenge facing "Changemakers, the builders of tomorrow’s progress machines," who must contend with "Nature and its fierce resistance to change." Kalanick envisions a new industrial age where humanity's strongest will be required to guide complex systems and industries to fruition, overcoming significant obstacles.
