Tanzanian Ex-Minister Mwambe Detained: Police Confirm Arrest

Former Minister Geofrey Mwambe has been confirmed to be in detention by the Dar es Salaam Regional Police Command since the night of December 7, 2025. He was arrested in the Tegeta area of Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, over allegations related to unspecified criminal offenses that are currently under investigation. The police statement, released on December 12, 2025, detailed that Mwambe, who served as a minister in the Prime Minister's Office for Investment and later for Industry and Trade, was apprehended during a routine security monitoring operation.
Preliminary legal procedures concerning the allegations against Mwambe are actively underway. Mwambe, also a former Director of the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) and the current Member of Parliament for Masasi, Mtwara (representing the CCM party), has remained in police custody since his initial arrest. After several days with limited public information regarding his detention, a significant legal development occurred on December 11, 2025.
On that date, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the Head of Criminal Investigations for the Dar es Salaam Special Zone (ZCO) jointly filed a court application concerning Mwambe's alleged unlawful detention. This application, identified as number 289778/2025, was specifically filed by Mwambe through his legal representative, Hekima Mwasipu, at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court. The filing was made under an emergency notice, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
The court hearing for this crucial application has been scheduled for December 15, 2025. In light of these ongoing developments, the police have issued a public appeal for calm, urging citizens to allow law enforcement agencies ample time to complete their investigation and the necessary legal procedures. This detention and subsequent legal action also come shortly after the Minister of Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, publicly called upon the police force to conduct all arrests responsibly and in strict adherence to the country's established laws.
