Super Eagles Soar! Nigeria Dominates Uganda with Resounding 3-1 AFCON Victory

The Super Eagles of Nigeria demonstrated their dominance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 by securing a convincing 3-1 victory over Uganda in their final Group C match. This win allowed Nigeria to conclude the group stage with a flawless record of nine points from three games, thereby ensuring Uganda's elimination from the tournament.
Raphael Onyedika emerged as a key performer, netting two crucial goals, while Paul Onuachu registered his first international goal in four years. Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute, expertly poking home a cross from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru after a well-executed offensive play, giving the Super Eagles a 1-0 lead at half-time. Uganda faced further challenges when their goalkeeper, Salim Magoola, received a red card in the second half, reducing them to ten men.
In the second half, Onyedika took center stage. He doubled Nigeria's lead in the 62nd minute, slotting the ball precisely through the goalkeeper’s legs following an accurate pass from Samuel Chukwueze. Just five minutes later, Onyedika struck again, making it 3-0 after receiving another precise cutback from Chukwueze, which he clinically finished. Uganda managed to pull one goal back in the 75th minute through substitute Rogers Kassim Mato, who cleverly chipped the ball over Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Uzoho after being assisted by Joseph Okello. However, this late consolation goal was insufficient to alter their fate, as Tanzania's 1-1 draw against Tunisia confirmed Uganda's exit from the competition.
With this victory, Nigeria topped Group C with a perfect nine points. Tunisia finished second with four points, while Tanzania, with a draw against Tunisia, secured third place and advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams. Uganda finished at the bottom of the group with a single point. The Super Eagles will now progress to the prestigious Round of 16 as Group C winners, maintaining their impressive perfect record.
Raphael Onyedika's outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award. Making his first appearance in the tournament, the Club Brugge star was instrumental in midfield alongside Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and showcased his scoring prowess with a brace within five minutes. Expressing his elation, Onyedika stated, “It’s an amazing feeling… we worked hard for today’s game. The team showed what we can do in the competition. Their support helps us on the pitch… we need them throughout the competition.” He further added,
