Super Eagles Drama: Unpaid Bonuses, Gabon Strike Resolved!
)
The Nigeria Super Eagles recently navigated internal turmoil over unpaid entitlements ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff semifinal against Gabon. The players staged a brief protest by boycotting Tuesday’s training session, demanding that their outstanding bonuses and allowances be settled. This unexpected standoff raised concerns about the team’s readiness for one of their most important qualifiers. Learn more about the tournament structure via the official FIFA World Cup platform.
NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen voiced unease over the timing of the strike, even as he acknowledged the players’ right to demand their dues. He stressed that such disputes could potentially disrupt preparations for a match of this magnitude but maintained strong faith in the team’s professionalism. Eguavoen added that every elite footballer dreams of playing at the World Cup, not only for national pride but also to boost global visibility and market value.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau pushed back against widespread claims that the federation owed the team approximately 30 matches’ worth of bonuses. In an interview, Gusau clarified that all previous outstanding payments were settled before the start of the current qualification campaign. He explained that after the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, the NFF and team leaders developed a new compensation structure centered on appearance fees and qualification targets. Under this revamped framework, any outstanding balances would relate only to ongoing World Cup qualifying fixtures. More on NFF governance can be found through the Nigeria Football Federation.
The dispute reached a resolution on Wednesday following negotiations involving the NFF and the National Sports Commission. Team captain William Troost-Ekong confirmed that the players had been paid their outstanding bonuses, enabling the immediate suspension of the strike. The squad promptly returned to full training at the Institut Royal de Formation des Cadres in Salé. This breakthrough restored focus to the high-stakes fixture awaiting them in Rabat.
Yet the leadership of Troost-Ekong became a topic of debate. Former Sierra Leone midfielder Michael Lahoud criticized the captain, calling him a “social media leader” and suggesting he had not displayed adequate authority during the crisis. Lahoud argued that Victor Osimhen should embrace a more commanding role, describing him as the squad’s “only true leader.” He urged the team to be more unified and to let their performance on the pitch speak louder than internal disputes.
