Super Eagles Drama: Osimhen-Lookman Squabble Overshadows 4-0 AFCON Victory Against Mozambique

Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), held at Morocco’s Complexe Sportif de Fès. While the victory secured Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals, an on-field dispute between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman drew significant attention, partially overshadowing the team’s emphatic performance.
Mozambique entered the match with high hopes, having reached the knockout stages for the first time in history. Captain Domingues emphasized the team’s determination to compete, stating, “The Nigerian team is very powerful, but we will not be intimidated…football is 90 minutes; anything can happen.” Despite their historic achievement, Mozambique struggled to contain Nigeria’s attacking prowess.
The Super Eagles, having topped Group C with maximum points from victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, dominated from the start. In the 20th minute, Ademola Lookman opened the scoring with a brilliant right-footed strike, assisted by Akor Adams. Five minutes later, Victor Osimhen doubled the lead with a clinical finish, once again set up by Adams. Nigeria maintained control throughout, showcasing a relentless attacking style that ultimately produced a comfortable 4-0 triumph.
Individual performances were standout for Nigeria. Lookman earned a perfect 10/10 rating for his involvement in all four goals, contributing one score and three assists, though one assist’s legitimacy was questioned due to a redirection by Adams. Alex Iwobi impressed with a 9/10 rating, providing key passes for three goals, while Osimhen, despite scoring twice in his most prolific AFCON match, was rated 7.5/10 following an on-field confrontation. Other key players, including Calvin Bassey (7.5/10) and Wilfred Ndidi (7/10), anchored the defense and midfield, while the likes of Stanley Nwabali, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyeamachi, and Frank Onyeka (all 6.5/10) delivered solid displays.
Tensions flared in the 64th minute when Osimhen expressed frustration toward Lookman, believing he was better positioned to receive a pass during a promising attack. Reports also suggest Osimhen made rude remarks to Bruno Onyeamachi before being substituted for Moses Simon, a moment that fueled fan and pundit discussion across social media.
Post-match, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle addressed the incident, stressing it was an internal team matter and would not be publicly debated. While satisfied with the victory, Chelle warned against complacency and emphasized the need for continued focus. Lookman, who was awarded Man-of-the-Match, downplayed the altercation, stating the team remains united and committed to advancing in the tournament, despite the brief squabble.
