Sundance Shake-Up: Prestigious Film Festival Unveils New 2027 Dates and Boulder Debut

The esteemed Sundance Film Festival is set to embark on a new chapter, officially announcing Boulder, Colorado, as the host city for its 2027 edition. This marks a significant transition after a decades-long presence in Park City, Utah, with the festival scheduled to run from January 21-31, 2027. While the full programming lineup will be unveiled closer to the event, excitement is already building for its debut in the scenic Colorado city.
Sundance Film Festival’s director, Eugene Hernandez, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming move, stating, “Working closely with the Colorado community, the 2027 Sundance Film Festival is already in our sights as we build towards an exciting debut in Boulder where our programming will meet audiences next January.” Hernandez highlighted Boulder’s unique appeal, describing it as "nestled at the base of Colorado’s iconic Flatirons," offering an ideal setting for global festivalgoers to immerse themselves in art, engage in conversation, and create lasting memories. The city's vibrant creative arts and tech scene, coupled with the energetic presence of University of Colorado Boulder students, faculty, and staff, further solidifies its suitability as the festival’s new home.
The Sundance Institute, the organization behind the annual celebration of independent cinema, has also disclosed the various venues across Boulder that will showcase the latest independent films. These locations encompass a diverse range of facilities, including local movie theaters, high school auditoriums, and several concert halls and performance spaces within the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Specific screening venues include the Boedecker Theater at Dairy Arts Center, Boulder High School Auditorium, Boulder Theater, Casey Middle School Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Cinemark Century Boulder, eTown Hall, Gordon Gamm Theater at Dairy Arts Center, Macky Auditorium Concert Hall at University of Colorado Boulder, Muenzinger Auditorium at University of Colorado Boulder, and Roe Green Theatre at University of Colorado Boulder. Additional spaces for talks and festival programming will be held at Canyon Theater (Boulder Public Library District), Dairy Arts Center, eTown Hall, and Old Main at University of Colorado Boulder.
Park City, Utah, which had become synonymous with the Sundance Film Festival over the years, hosted its final edition in January. That event featured notable premieres such as Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan’s intense drama “Josephine,” Olivia Wilde’s ensemble comedy “The Invite,” and the unique Charli XCX mockumentary “The Moment.” Since its inception in 1985, Sundance has played a crucial role as a launch pad for numerous independent cinema classics, fostering the careers of countless filmmakers and introducing groundbreaking works like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Napoleon Dynamite,” “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” and “Little Miss Sunshine” to global audiences. The move to Boulder signifies a new chapter for an institution that has profoundly shaped the landscape of independent film.
