Sultan's Stern Warning: Nigerians Must Scrutinize Campaign Pledges Before Voting

Ahead of the 2027 general election, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has issued a crucial call to action for both Nigerian voters and politicians. The monarch urged citizens to meticulously assess the promises made by politicians before casting their votes, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making based on what best serves their interests and the nation's.

Addressing politicians directly, the Sultan stressed the necessity of focusing on critical issues that promote peace, unity, and development. He cautioned against politicizing national challenges such as insecurity, advocating for issue-based campaigns that strengthen national cohesion. While acknowledging that no government can entirely eradicate insecurity and poverty, the Sultan noted that efforts can be made to mitigate their adverse effects on the populace.

These pronouncements were made during a visit by the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Campaign Council to his palace in Sokoto. The high-powered delegation, led by its Director-General, Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar, sought royal blessings and prayers for their upcoming campaign activities. Yari, who represents Zamfara Central, articulated that the visit marked the formal commencement of the council's engagement and mobilization efforts, strategically beginning with the Sultanate Council due to the traditional institution's vital role in fostering peace, unity, and national cohesion.

Senator Yari pledged that the APC campaign would be anchored on principles of peace, issue-based engagement, inclusivity, and the collective interest of Nigerians. He underscored the Tinubu administration’s commitment to development, economic reforms, infrastructure, and security, expressing optimism that ongoing federal government reforms would continue to yield positive results and establish a robust foundation for sustainable development. He further urged APC supporters and stakeholders to maintain unity and focus throughout the electoral period.

Governors Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, Nasir Idris of Kebbi, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara also spoke at the event, commending the Sultan for his exemplary fatherly leadership and significant contributions to national peace and development. They highlighted the deliberate choice to make the Sultanate Council their initial point of contact, recognizing the Sultan's esteemed status as a respected traditional and spiritual leader whose influence extends far beyond Sokoto. Other notable members of the delegation included Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Senator Adamu Aliero, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari, and former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
