Stunning Upset! Durban City Shatters Orlando Pirates' Title Dream

The 2025/26 Betway Premiership season reached a pivotal point as Orlando Pirates fumbled a golden opportunity to seize control of the league title race, playing to a frustrating goalless draw against Durban City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon, May 16. Heading into the penultimate round of fixtures, the Buccaneers stood one victory away from effectively ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ decade-long dominance and clinching their first league title since the 2011/12 season, marking a 5,110-day wait for their passionate supporters.
Orlando Pirates had built serious momentum, arriving in formidable shape after remaining unbeaten in 11 league matches, securing eight wins and three draws, while conceding only three goals in their last seven outings and scoring 22 times in that period. Their confidence was further bolstered by a commanding 2-0 victory over Durban City in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and a recent shock defeat of Mamelodi Sundowns by TS Galaxy, which had reopened the title race and made Pirates' path less complicated.
Durban City, however, were not without their own motivations. Despite having recently lifted the 2026 Nedbank Cup, securing continental football, their league form had dipped dramatically, being winless in their last six Betway Premiership matches and entering the game on the back of three consecutive draws. Nevertheless, they were locked in a tense battle for a top-eight finish, with every point crucial to secure their MTN8 position for the next season.
The highly anticipated match at the sold-out Orlando Amstel Arena saw Orlando Pirates deploy a lineup featuring Chaine, Sebelebele, Seema, Sibisi, Hotto, Selepe, Mbatha, Appollis, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng, and Mbuthuma. Durban City’s starting eleven included Asare, Jalai, Mkhize, Ncanana, Mashego, Nodada, Jurgens, Poggenpoel, Mokwena, Lubumba, and Kamatuka. Expectations were mounting, with both sides having already tasted domestic silverware in the ongoing season.
Despite the high stakes and the roaring home crowd, the Buccaneers struggled to find the breakthrough. The match ended in a goalless stalemate, leaving them under immense pressure ahead of their decisive final clash against Orbit College, where now only a win may be enough to secure the championship. The draw was seen as a fumbled golden opportunity that could have placed them in a commanding position.
Pirates' inability to score stemmed from a combination of factors, including a distinct lack of urgency and creativity on their part, coupled with Durban City's disciplined and deep defensive structure. The visitors consistently played with almost all their players behind the ball, forming a compact low block that denied space to the Pirates midfield and forced ineffective attacking patterns. Though the Sea Robbers showed greater intent after halftime, they lacked composure and sharp decision-making in the final third.
The pressure of the occasion seemed to weigh on the players, leading to simple passes going astray and attacks breaking down too easily. Substitutions, including the early introduction of Evidence Makgopa for an injured Yanela Mbuthuma and later Tshepang Moremi and Abdoulaye Mariko, failed to shift the momentum. Several Pirates players appeared to prioritize individual brilliance over effective team combination, further hurting their chances in key attacking moments.
The 0-0 draw means Orlando Pirates missed a massive chance to pull level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns, who had already completed their campaign. With only two games left to play, the title race remains wide open, intensifying the pressure on Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side for their final fixture. Meanwhile, the Betway Premiership continues to deliver drama across the board, with battles for the top-eight and against relegation also reaching breaking point.
