Stranger Things Season 5 Breaks Netflix Records, Faces AI Claims

Netflix's hit series, Stranger Things, continues to dominate the platform's all-time charts, with Season 5 making major gains. After adding viewership from its highly anticipated finale, the season climbed the rankings and now sits at sixth place with 115 million views, surpassing popular titles such as Bridgerton Season 1 and 3, The Queen’s Gambit, and The Night Agent Season 1. The show’s success extends beyond its latest season.
Stranger Things Continues to Break Netflix Record
Stranger things season 4 remains firmly in third place with 149.7 million views, trailing only Wednesday Season 1 and Adolescence. The series also showed its continued popularity by placing all five seasons in Netflix’s Global Top 10 during the week of January 5-11. Since Netflix tracks viewership over a 91-day window, Season 5 is expected to continue gaining views until March, which could further affect its ranking. beyond the charts, the Stranger Things universe is expanding. Netflix has confirmed two upcoming spin-off projects, including an animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, set between Seasons 2 and 3 and taking viewers back to Hawkins during the winter of 1985. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that animation was among their earliest ideas for extending the story, with Matt Duffer explaining the intention to “evoke a feeling of an ’80s cartoon.”
New Spin-Off and AI Controversy
The second spin-off project, a live-action series, has been in development since at least 2022 and will take the franchise in a new direction. Ross Duffer confirmed that the new series will not be set in the 1980s, signaling a shift away from the show’s signature era. “Whatever we do next, I’ll tell you this, it’s not going to be set in the ’80s. I think we’re done with the ’80s.” This indicates a conscious effort to explore new temporal and thematic territories within the Stranger Things universe. Alongside its continued chart success and expansion, the franchise recently found itself at the center of a contemporary debate. Following the release of “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5,” a documentary offering a behind-the-scenes look, fans quickly observed a moment that allegedly showed Reddit and ChatGPT open on a laptop, sparking backlash amid Hollywood’s ongoing sensitivity toward artificial intelligence after recent industry strikes.
Documentary director Martina Radwan addressed the controversy in a subsequent interview, questioning the certainty of ChatGPT’s presence and downplaying its significance. She noted that many people use tools like ChatGPT for quick research, suggesting the moment was overinterpreted rather than evidence of improper AI use. “But to me it’s like, doesn’t everybody have it open, to just do quick research? How can you possibly write a storyline with 19 characters and use ChatGPT? I don’t even understand. Again, first of all, nobody has actually proved that it was open.”
Director Responds to AI Speculation
Martina Radwan further pushed back against claims that the presence of digital tools, if they were visible, suggested the use of AI-generated writing on Stranger Things. She compared the situation to everyday multitasking, explaining that having such tools open does not mean they are being used to write scripts. Radwan emphasized that the backlash was disappointing, noting that the focus shifted from appreciation of the show to unnecessary scrutiny.
When asked directly whether she witnessed any use of AI in the writers’ room, Radwan was unequivocal. She stated that she observed only creative discussions and collaboration, not artificial intelligence. She also addressed common misunderstandings about how writers’ rooms operate, clarifying that they are spaces for story development, not continuous script writing. According to Radwan, ideas are explored collectively before being refined into scripts, and participating in that process is a privilege.
As of now, neither Netflix nor the Duffer Brothers have released official statements regarding the speculation. While some fans continue to debate the issue, others appear satisfied with Radwan’s explanation.
