Steven Spielberg's '80s Sci-Fi Sleeper Hit Sets October 2026 Sequel Date!

Ernest Cline's popular 'Ready Player One' franchise is set for a significant expansion beyond its original book and Steven Spielberg's 2018 film adaptation, with new graphic novel versions on the horizon. 'Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel' is scheduled for release in the U.S. on October 6, 2026, as a Target-exclusive hardcover, with wider paperback and hardcover editions becoming available on March 2, 2027. For audiences in the UK and Canada, the graphic novel will also hit major retailers on October 6. This adaptation is being published by Ten Speed Graphic, with the story written by Scott Peterson and illustrations by Meredith Laxton. This initiative is not a one-off, as a graphic novel adaptation for 'Ready Player Two' is already planned for 2028, indicating a broader strategy to reintroduce Cline's narratives in a fresh format, treating them as new versions of the story. Steven Spielberg's cinematic take on 'Ready Player One' was, according to Collider's review, a visually dazzling adventure that successfully overcame its sometimes shaky source material and nostalgia-heavy marketing, focusing more on the protagonist's journey of forging their own identity. The review concluded that while it might not be among Spielberg’s absolute masterpieces, it demonstrated his continued mastery of blockbuster storytelling.
Meanwhile, another beloved 1980s cult classic, 'Troop Beverly Hills', is also making a return with a sequel now in development. Actress Cameron Diaz, who recently ended a decade-long hiatus from acting, is slated to star in and produce this follow-up to the 1989 sleeper hit. Clea DuVall, known for her directorial work on 'Happiest Season' and the dramedy 'The Intervention', has been tapped to both write and direct the 'Troop Beverly Hills' sequel, mirroring her previous feature efforts. Diaz has a suddenly busy schedule, having returned in the Netflix actioner 'Back in Action', and is set to appear alongside Keanu Reeves in the Jonah Hill-directed comedy 'Outcome', as well as reprising her role as Princess Fiona in the upcoming animated sequel 'Shrek 5'. The original 'Troop Beverly Hills' film, directed by Jeff Kanew and penned by Saturday Night Live scribes Pamela Norris and Margaret Grieco Oberman, was loosely inspired by producer Ava Ostern Fries's real-life experiences. It centered on the shopaholic socialite Phyllis Nefler (played by Shelley Long), who, amidst a separation from her husband, decides to lead her daughter Hannah's (Jenny Lewis) local Wilderness Girls troop despite her lack of outdoor experience. Her unconventional methods lead to conflict with rival troop leader Velda Plendor (Betty Thomas) but endeared her to her own troop, which included future stars like Carla Gugino. Although not an immediate critical or commercial success, the film found a significant audience through cable television and VHS. The sequel will be produced by Laurence Mark, alongside Diaz and her business partner Katherine Power, under the Sony production banner. Sony has a successful history with Diaz, who starred in their films 'The Holiday', 'Bad Teacher', and 'Charlie's Angels', the latter of which was executive produced by original 'Troop Beverly Hills' villain Betty Thomas. No release date has been announced for the 'Troop Beverly Hills' sequel as of yet.
