Sterling K. Brown Unlocks 'Paradise's' Secret 3-Season Vision: "More Than Just a Bunker" [Exclusive Insight]

Hulu’s thriller series Paradise, created by This Is Us mastermind Dan Fogelman, captivated audiences by evolving from a high-stakes whodunit into a sweeping dystopian mystery. With Season 2, the story breaks free from the underground bunker that defined the first chapter, expanding into a wider and more dangerous world.
Sterling K. Brown returns as Xavier Collins, who ventures beyond the subterranean city in a desperate search for his wife, Teri (Enuka Okuma). The new season also introduces Shailene Woodley as Annie, a survivor whose story unfolds in the premiere episode, marking a powerful and immediate addition to the series.
In an interview with Collider, Steve Weintraub spoke with Brown and Woodley about the new season and the show’s long-term vision. Fogelman has crafted Paradise as a deliberately contained three-season arc, a decision designed to avoid narrative sprawl in an era of endless streaming content. This tight structure ensures sustained momentum, meaningful consequences, and a clearly defined endgame.
Meticulous World-Building and a Three-Season Vision
One of Season 2’s standout elements is its remarkable production design, particularly the meticulous recreation of Graceland in the opening episode. Woodley admitted she was initially convinced the scene had been filmed at the real landmark. She described playfully interacting with a photo of Elvis and jokingly feeling his presence through the walls. The attention to detail was so precise that the only difference between the set and the real Graceland was a two-inch discrepancy in the length of the couch.
Brown echoed that sentiment, sharing a story about the show’s head of makeup, Zoe Hay, whose own family believed she had actually visited Graceland. This level of authenticity underscores the show’s commitment to immersive world-building.
Brown also discussed Xavier’s evolving journey in Episode 2, which places him on the road in a world long believed to be destroyed. As he encounters isolated groups of survivors, Xavier must grapple with questions of trust, cooperation, and morality. The central theme asks whether people will unite for collective survival or prioritize self-interest. Brown expressed deep admiration for Fogelman’s detailed planning, revealing that he already knows how the series ends. He described the conclusion as “beyond good” and praised Fogelman’s imaginative and inventive storytelling, assuring fans that the three-season arc will be deeply satisfying.
Lighthearted Sets, Fan Love, and What’s Next
Despite the show’s bleak themes, both Brown and Woodley emphasized that the atmosphere on set is surprisingly joyful. They described an environment filled with laughter, warmth, and levity—an essential counterbalance to the intensity of the material. Brown humorously recalled getting poison oak while filming on location and experiencing Benadryl for the first time. The cast also shared their unforgettable experience at CCXP in Brazil, where thousands of fans greeted them with overwhelming enthusiasm, likening the reception to that of rock stars.
Beyond Paradise, Brown offered an exciting update on the upcoming Voltron movie. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and filmed in Australia, the project holds personal significance for Brown, who grew up watching the Japanese anime. He also noted his connection to producer Bob Koplar, whose family helped distribute Voltron in the U.S., and described the film simply as “pretty dope.”
The conversation also touched on favorite Christopher Nolan films. Both Brown andWoodley agreed that Inception stands out for its layered themes and rewatch value. Brown additionally cited The Dark Knight and mentioned his son’s growing appreciation for Interstellar, while both actors praised the brilliance of The Prestige and Memento.
Paradise Season 2 premiered with its first three episodes on Hulu on February 23. Viewers in Brazil can stream the series on Disney+, while audiences in the U.S. can watch it on Hulu or Hulu on Disney+.
