State School Trip Shock: Mum Reveals Jaw-Dropping Costs - How Does Your Bill Compare?

A mother has expressed her astonishment after discovering the exorbitant cost of a proposed school trip abroad for her child. Nicole, the mother, took to TikTok to share an email detailing the trip, questioning whether other parents were "secret millionaires" given the price tag. The local state school has suggested an educational excursion to Peru in South America, a destination that sparked widespread surprise, with many reminiscing about more traditional trips to France or Germany.
According to Nicole, the school indicated "lots of interest" in the trip, which would involve a 15-hour flight and take place "next year or the year after." Despite her children not expressing a desire to go away with the school, Nicole reviewed the proposed details. She recounted her disbelief, stating, "When I was reading it, I was thinking, 'This must be a typing error. This has got to be a typing error.'"
The TikToker highlighted that her children attend a state school, not a private one, making the cost even more startling. For a journey spanning just under four weeks, including food and accommodation, parents were asked to pay an astounding £5,695 per child. Nicole, clearly gobsmacked, challenged the notion of widespread parental interest: "Can someone, please, tell me who's paying for their child to do that? Because the school reckon they've had lots of interest and then you have to put your child's name forward - and the school will let you know if they've got a place to go to Peru. So they've got people queuing up to send their kids to Peru for nearly £6,000? What the hell is going on?"
As a mother of twins, Nicole calculated that sending both her children on the trip would incur a cost close to an "astronomical £12,000." Posting under the username @nicoleisthisme, she voiced her suspicion that the school might be "making a profit from these trips," adding in a caption, "What happened to a day trip to France?? I thought that was lavish."
The TikTok clip, uploaded recently, quickly garnered significant attention, accumulating over 190,000 views and 5,000 likes, alongside more than a thousand comments from users expressing their shock. One commenter speculated that the high cost might cover "the teachers' time away too." Another parent compared the price, stating, "WHAAAAATTT!! We've got 2 weeks abroad all inclusive for 6 of us next year for that." Other reactions included disbelief at the Peru destination compared to traditional European trips and comments like, "You could have such a decent family holiday for that. Noooooo."
